Le Meridien Etoile-- Hotel Dining

We are staying at this hotel and am hooked up through a friend with a special rate and the potential to get 50% off all hotel dining-- in room as well.

Of course you can never believe a hotel%26#39;s web site and what they say about their amenities-- but I figured I would ask here in case anyone knew anything about these places... Additionally, was wondering about the jazz club-- it%26#39;s open til 2 AM so, I assume it might be cool, but who knows... I will not be there at 2AM, but I guess it%26#39;s nice to know we have the option!

Jazz Club Lionel Hampton-- name speaks for itself

L%26#39;Orénoc-- is the restaurant

The jazz club is excellent; just take out a second mortgage for the drinks.

The restaurant is hit or miss.

The breakfast buffet - well, I%26#39;ve had better croissants at Newark Airport!!

Notice the lack of words like %26#39;stunning,%26#39; %26#39;dynamic,%26#39; or %26#39;unparalleled.%26#39;

The hotel is lovely, but there are service issues. The last time I was there, the doorman was quite rude to me. I needed a taxi, and asked for his help. He told me I needed to wait because he %26#39;was busy talking to someone else.%26#39; He proceeded to talk to this other gentleman for another 5-10 minutes, and it was clearly NOT a business conversation or assistance with another guest. Finally I needed to get to an appointment so I went up to one of the cabs waiting there by the roadside but he shook his head at me and told me he would not take me unless the doorman - 20 yards away - hailed him over. Clearly there was an arrangement here for the doorman to get the tips.

So, I went back inside the hotel to find someone else to assist me with the cab. One of the concierges came outside with me and told the doorman to get me a cab. So, he finally hailed the same cab that refused to take me the first time - and then the doorman got mad at me because I didn%26#39;t tip him!!

All of this being said, if I got a really really good rate on the sleeping room, I would stay here again. However, 50% off on all meals wouldn%26#39;t tempt me at all, because there are so many fabulous places to eat in Paris (and less expensively than L%26#39;Orenoc, and they are well within walking distance of the hotel) that I can%26#39;t imagine taking more than one or two meals in the hotel.

I%26#39;m sorry for this lukewarm review. Just be sure you are comparing apples to apples to know if the deal your friend can get you is really a good deal indeed. When you calculate how much the room rate is going to be, can you still get a better rate somewhere else that also has better service?

Good luck, and no matter where you stay in Paris, you will have a great time because you won%26#39;t spend much of it in a hotel anyway!!

Thanks for your review-- we will only be there two nights, and are basically getting 70% off the room. We%26#39;ll be out all day and may just want to eat back at the hotel if we can%26#39;t find something else... was just wondering if the hotel dining was worthwhile.

As long as the beds are there, and we can get a taxi to the airport to head to greece for the rest of our trip-- we%26#39;re good.

If you have any reccos for more casual restaurants nearby-- for breakfast, lunch or dinner-- would love to hear them! Need to be vegetarian friendly though!

Thanks,

Randi

Loved the hotel and their people, but clearly they have a prolem with their breakfast, it was worse than a **, hummm... terrible.

But I can certainly recommend staying there as you get a very spacious room for far less than the other prestigious hotels you have in Paris.

It%26#39;s not worth spending 700€+ in a room if you do not plan to do anything else than sleeping in...

I also rented a car and a phone at the airport, to avoid taxis and stupid hotel charges for phone calls, it ended up being very cheap.

If you to the Meridien, I suggest you try their fine food restaurant, I had a fantastic romantic diner with my wife the night before we left, great food with excellent cheese selection and...a bottle of red Bordeaux, what else?

I miss Paris already...can%26#39;t wait to come back! AC
