I am planning a romantic break away with my boyfriend in January to Paris. I am paying for it myself therefore and am finding it very difficutl to get an apartment within my price range. I do not like to stay in a hotel as the rooms are very small in european cities and expensive for what you get. I have therefore decided to go fro an apartment whcih seem to be quite expensive also. I eventually found a lovely apartment whcih was only 1 kilometre from teh city centre, or so the website said! On looking up the address (54 Rue Pouchet, Paris, District 17) i found that it was a lot further than i had thought. The apartment is perfect other than that though and within my price range. Judt looking for advice on whether to go for it or not...My friend who was in Paris recenlty recently advised me to book it as she said that Paris is huge and no matter where you stay you are always fair away from some of the attractions and the metro will bring me anywhere in a short time anyways. can anyone hel please??????

I don%26#39;t disagree with your friend but in this case I think the transportation aspect is a problem. The neighborhood is served by Metro Line-13, the most congested and unpleasant Metro line, particularly in the north of the city. The nearest station is %26#39;above the split%26#39; where the line splits into two directions so the trains run half as often. There%26#39;s also the fact that the bus service in that area is sparse at best. If you have the budget to use cabs, I%26#39;d have no reservations with this area but if not, transportation is going to throw a wrench in the works.

If you give an indication of the price range you are looking for, people may be able to make suggestions for apartments you had not yet considered and give you comments about their experiences.
For instance, Vacation in Paris (www.vacationinparis.com) has quite a few that are not terribly expensive by most poeple%26#39;s standards, for example, there are several studios that are just under $100 USD (50 GBP - you did not indicate where you are)per night but as we don%26#39;t know how strict your budget is, can%26#39;t tell whether that would would suit your situation. In general, theirs are in locations that are more central than the one you are asking about.
There also are a number of other agencies with budget apartments. Here is a recent post with some information that might be helpful: tripadvisor.com/…9470477 Here is another that also has lots of ideas and information: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187147-i14-k89535…
You might also want to do a search yourself on this forum, if you haven%26#39;t already done that. People will be happy to help you, with a bit more information to go on.

I have access to a free apartment outside the peripherique - and I%26#39;d rather pay to stay in a hotel. Its a good hour each way on the metro and its worth it to me to just walk outside my hotel and be centrally located in Paris.
My parents (who go several times a year) have access to the same apartment - and they agree - they pay to rent in the Marais instead. Their last apt was a studio on the Rue de Braque. If that location is good, PM me, and I%26#39;ll ask them where they got it (their usual Marais apt has a long term renter so they got this one from some service). They%26#39;ll be on a plane to St Barth tomorrow, and I wont be able to reach them until Wednesday - so I%26#39;ll ask in advance.

I disagree withyour friend in that, although Paris is huge, most of the sites are clustered in a central area,( Sacre Coeur and Effel Tower) being the furtherest out from the center. All within 10 inutes on metro. The area you are suggesting is far out. I have found I can easily walk to many sites from any hotel in the 1st. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th arrondissmonts. Also many like the 7th as it borders on the 6th and is only across the river from the others.
Anyways, there are some decent apratments in central areas that are not very expensive, although I guess that depends on what your budget actually is.
