Train Paris to Amsterdam - what towns does it go through?

Hi,

I am planning our trip to France next year and wish to visit the WW1 Sites of the Somme on our way through to Amsterdam.

Can anyone tell me please what towns/cities the train from Paris to Amsterdam would stop at so that we could break our journey for a night and do a WW1 Tour of the Somme. In particular I wish to visit Moquet Farm and also Villers Bretonneux. I realize that these areas are quite a few kms apart.

Thanks

Sue

PS How long does the train take from Paris to Amsterdam?

If you take the Thalys high speed train, it will not between Paris and the Belgian border. It stops at Brussels and in a few towns in the the Netherlands, but nowhere in France.

Rail map of France:

…raileurope.com/map_of_europe/benelux.html

Travel time:

4h11 without any changes

4h43 if you change in Brussels.

Train schedules:

http://www.voyages-sncf.com

click the union jack on the bottom of the page for English

click %26quot;Timetable%26quot; in the blue box at the top of the page.

If you want to see WWI sights, I would suggest taking the train to Amiens and using the city as a base.

First sentence should read %26quot;It will not stop...%26quot;

If you use the German railways website http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en to get a list of possible trains for your journey and click for further details, there is then a link under the individual timetables: %26quot;Show intermediate stops%26quot;

Voilà!

There is a TGV station not far from Amiens, called %26#39;TGV Haute Picardie%26#39;, but I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s used for international services.

I suspect you might find it best to rent a car and drive

to the Somme... I%26#39;m sure you will need a car to see the battlefields

and sites you wish to visit.

I have driven in Paris but having learned to drive in Montreal

did not find it daunting. ;^) The last time though, I picked up

a rental on a Sunday morning at the Montparnasse Tower

and almost had the streets to myself until we were out of town.

I would suggest you take a train from Amsterdam to Lille, hire a car and drive from there - you could do a 2 or 3 day wander down the back roads, starting with the Western Front (Mene and Armentieres) and progressing through the Somme battlefields to Paris.

Depending how much time you want to spend getting thoruoughly emotionally drained I reckon this could be done easily in two days, or for the full masochistic trip, 3. Any more and you will have no more tears to shed.......
