Chartres

I am planning to spend a week in Paris in Sept. 2008. What would be the best way to make a side trip to see Chartres cathedral .I am not big on tours and would like to spend the time there on my own schedule.

You can take the train from Paris, and chart your own schedule.

Or, you can book one of the bus tours like Cityrama or Pariscape, they cost a lot more than the train, but don%26#39;t misled by the term %26quot;tour%26quot;. They basically take you there and take you back, and you are on your own for several hours to see and do whatever you wish. There is no %26quot;tour%26quot; per se.

A visit to CHARTRES is one of the easiest do-it-yourself daytrips you can do from Paris. It%26#39;s almost a %26#39;..no-brainer..%26#39;. It%26#39;s pretty much as simple as making your way to Gare Montparnasse in Paris, taking a SNCF / TER train to CHARTRES (70 mins---25,80€ r.t.). Exit CHARTRES station, look up for the spires of Chartres Cethedral and walk 6-10 minutes up the hill to the cathedral and the old quarter of the city. The Chartres Tourist information office is just to the left of the Cathedral. They offer a pretty good free brochure for self-directed walking tour of the city...as well as other tourist information. The noted lecturer, Malcolm Miller also does tours of Chartres Cathedral.
