My wife and I will be in Provence late April and the beginning of May 2008 . Does anyone know if bullfights are scheduled then?

May 1st is a grand time to be in Arles as that%26#39;s when they have the annual celebration of their Camargue heritage. In the morning there%26#39;s a fairly lengthy parade of folks in beautiful (!) historic costume (many riding the white Camargue ponys) and then in the afternoon is the annual Fete des les Guardiens in the old arena with several hours of horse-related activity including an hour or two of the French-style bullfighting. If you do get there for the morning parade, ask around for directions to the old church where everyone winds up for the blessing - it%26#39;s really something and worth the effort to get a good vantage point. Book your room well ahead or, if staying outside of town, get in early as it does get busy. Arles has a website that may have a season schedule for the bullfights.

Correction: Fete de les Gardians.

Thanks Roger
Sounds like seeing the Fete des Gardians is worthwhile and close to seeing %26quot;bullfighting%26quot;. We haven%26#39;t decided on a central location as yet, which we are still researching. Avignon has been suggested to us but we have read a number of negatives about safety at night etc. Also we would like to us a car as little as possible. Have you any suggestion for a good central location in this area. Thanks lynall

I stay a great deal in Avignon. There is no more crime there at night than in any other city as long as you stay within the walled portion. Arles is another good central location for this area. If you do not want to drive, you%26#39;ll really do yourself a service by finding a central location with services such as those above. I prefer these two locations to Nimes or Montpelliers.
