We%26#39;ll be in Paris May 20-27 staying in an apartment in the 4th arr. and are looking for inexpensive places to grab a bite. We need to watch our budget and hubby is a very picky eater to boot, the meat and potatoes type.
We%26#39;re planning on quite a bit of picnicking and eating in so I%26#39;d love to hear about any great places to pick up things for the apartment as well. Our location is the corner of Rue Pavee and Rue des Rosiers.
Thanks so much,
Jennifer

Ding, ding, ding! You must go to L%26#39;As du Falafel at least once. It isn%26#39;t your meat and potato place but the falafel there is heavenly. It is on Rue des Rosiers. Don%26#39;t take my word for it. Just walk over there and check out the long line at the walk-up window for lunch or dinner. Don%26#39;t worry. It is really fast. They usually have one person taking your money and your order so that when you get to the window all that remains to be done is for your falafel to be made. I am not into health foods or anything like that. This place is truly yummy. I was wandering the streets waiting for my chosen dinner restaurant to open when I came upon this place. I spotted the long line and a falafel in someone%26#39;s hand and there and then I changed my dinner plans. I moaned with joy throughout, and went back two other times on that trip. The basic falafel is what most people get (4.5E) but get whatever sounds best to you. They also have a sit-down restaurant next door which is usually packed--at least for lunch. Beware--there are several other falafel shops in that same vicinity but I have read over and over that L%26#39;As du Falafel is the best!Enjoy!

Well, i have to tell you that you are right down the street from Las du Falafal on rue des roisers. IMO one of the best Falafal joints in Paris. I understand your hubby is very picky, therefore, have him try the Schwarma. If he likes gyros he will love this. I am a huge meat eater, but can not get enough of their falafal sanwhiches...also if you go south on rue Pavee, you will pop out around St Paul and there are a quite a few bars and cafes....One is a Scottish pub, Guiness sign hangin off the front, meat and potato pub fare....
THere are so many excellent places to eat for cheap around the Marias and all around Paris, you just have to get about 2 blocks away from the tourist areas and you will find good cheap eats. Remember that every restaurant, cafe, brassarie ahave to post their menu outside. So take a peek and if it doesn%26#39;t fit your budget or doesn%26#39;t look appetizing, continue on, cause there are 6 more on the same block

I love falafel and have added it to my list! If it%26#39;s a take-out place I can get one and we%26#39;ll find something else for Scott. I%26#39;m afraid we%26#39;re probably going to be one of those predictable American couples heading straight for a McDonald%26#39;s but the boy%26#39;s got to eat!

Not cheap at all... but if you get homesick for Louisiana cooking, “Thanksgiving” on rue Saint Paul is an American grocery store and Cajun restaurant

Cheapest coffee (and friendliest café) in the neighborhood : Royal Turenne - corner of the rue des Francs Bourgeois and rue de Turenne. One euro, standing at the bar. More expensive if you sit down. That’s for a French coffee (which Americans sometimes find too strong). A café crème (with milk) costs more. They also serve hamburgers... much better than McDonalds!
There’s an excellent butcher on the rue Saint Antoine, near the metro St Paul. They do roasted chickens which you can buy hot and take back to your apartment to feast on.

you won%26#39;t be far from Bastille, so you should really go check out the Sunday market and then picnic at Place des Vosges. Hubby and I did that during our visit. We picked up a slew of food stuff: olives, cheese, bread and roti chicken. it was one of our most memorable meals in Paris!

Don%26#39;t worry about it. There is food everywhere. Stands selling crepes and baguette sandwiches which are wonderful...
stop anywhere to eat...
just relax and enjoy.
I second the Richard Lenoire market!! It is the start of a perfect Sunday in Paris. Open Sundays and Thursdays.
Great breads, and cheese, fruit, veggies...amazing...colorful...fun!

Thank you so much!
To tell the truth I was expecting to get reamed about the meat and potatoes thing but y%26#39;all have been more than gracious!
I%26#39;m really interested in hearing about the markets and butchers and things since I plan on preparing quite a few meals at our apartment. That way I can stay on budget and make sure that Scott at least eats something. Our apartment has a full kitchen.
Love, love, love the Thanksgiving site! Sometimes I think Louisiana cuisine is taking over the world. I had Tabasco with my eggs once in Beijing of all places. I may be biased but Eggs Sardou could probably stand with pride next to any French dish., very yummy. I%26#39;m from New Iberia (the home of Tabasco sauce) so we%26#39;ll probably skip dining in the restaurant but I%26#39;ll definately have a look in the shop.
(BTW: If you look at their website, a Cajun is not a Bubba, he%26#39;s a Coona$$. Hubby Scott, who grew up Presbyterian and eating chicken and dumplings is a Bubba. My brother who grew up Catholic and eating boiled crawfish is a Coona$$. Bubba does sound less offensive so I guess that%26#39;s why they chose it. Down here it%26#39;s not a derogatory term at all. If they want to use a name I suggest Thibodeaux or Boudreaux.)
Back on topic. I%26#39;d love to go to a market and buy really fresh seasonal stuff. What%26#39;s at it%26#39;s peak in late May?
Thanks again,
Jennifer
I hope this doesn%26#39;t get removed for the coon*** thing.
