My friend and I are planning our frist trip to Paris...I just want to know, which arrondissements are the best to stay in? It%26#39;s our first time in Paris, so I want to stay in an arrondissement that is ideally situated between different landmarks, shops, clubs...lol. Picky huh? I know that all the arrondissements are good...but which one is the best for first-time Paris tourists?

Well not all arrondissmonts are good. Many are though. Most people would agree that the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th , 6th ,7th and 9th are all good .
I like the 6th best , but would also( and have ) stay in the 4th , 5th , and 1st.
I found the 1st very quiet at night( as in a tad boring) but liked being within walking distance of the Lourve , the Madeline, and the Champs Elysees during day.
The 5th is fun, and very lively, some areas are just a tad too %26quot;touristy and crowded %26quot;for my taste, so I have finally settled ( for now, LOL) with the 6th as favorite. Lively enough, little cafes and bistros everywhere, and close to many sites( walk to Notre Dame and Latin Quarter, Cluny and Louvre , but many quieter little streets . Good metro and bus lines.
Basically I figure any %26quot;central %26quot; arr. is fine, closer to river is best as it is the the true %26quot; center %26quot; of Paris to me.
Some travellers like the some of the other arr. , especially those who go for longer visits and like to rent an apartment and settle into a %26quot; neighborhood%26quot;, but , my experiences are based on shorter trips of 2 weeks or so. ( Olus I am a hotel freak, hate to cook or make beds on vacation! LOL)

It does come down to personal taste, however, I agree that the 6th is the best for first time visitors. It is my favorite area to stay. The 4th, 5th, 7th and 1st would probably be my next choices (in order). For the first time, I think the closer to the Seine you can be, the better. It%26#39;s nice to be centrally located and able to walk as many places as possible. Of course, the metro is great and easy to navigate so staying near a metro is also key. Happy planning!

I love the 6th - the area has a lovely, vibrant feel. There are numerous shops, cafes and restaurants on hand. Luxembourg Gardens are within walking distance as is the Siene. Notre Dame, Concergerie and Ile St Louis as well - with a bit more effort ;)

I assume that the last number on the postcode is the arrondissement? It is all new to me.

I prefer the 6th, st germain des pres. My second choice is the 5th, latin quarter which is adjacent to the 6th. My third choice would be the 4th, le marais, although for me it is not as central to the center of paris. I have stayed in Paris about 6 times, and my first time I stayed in the 1st. I did not care for it myself, it was too commercial and did not have the parisian charm I love so much. But, that is my own personal taste of course !

Americans will prefer the 4th, 5th, 6th 7th.
Europeans prefer the 2nd, 9th, 10th, 11th. 17th
Budget tourists prefer the 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th, 20th

JollyJumper2, how did you arrive at this broad and far reaching conclusion? I%26#39;m totally intrigued. I%26#39;m American and I don%26#39;t see the logic.
|||
My Passport must be wrong because I%26#39;ve only stayed in the 2nd (3x) 10th (2x) and the 11th (1st visite). Guess I%26#39;m a Euro after all.

I have another question about which arr to stay in. After being recommended to stay as central as I can, I came to the conclusion that I feel that the 1st %26amp; 2nd will be too quiet, Marais will be too touristy. I like the idea of Montmarte (sp) it seems ideal, but seems to be a bit far out. The area around the Moulin Rouge seems ok, just far enough out to be not too far (if that makes sense!) but I have read in some of the reviews of the Moulin Rouge that many people found the area seedy and couldn%26#39;t get out fast enough, do you find this to be true?

Thanks! Hahaha...very useful info. But for the 6th arrondissement, would that be good for early 20 y/o%26#39;s?
