day trips from Lyon by car

We%26#39;ll be staying a few days in Lyon as part of our 16-day trip in France (with rental car) and would love to have suggestions of day-trips from this city.

Tell a little more about you and your interest, the advices will be more accurate !

First ideas (short trips, less than an hour drive)

- go to the Dombes, a landscape of hundred of little ponds, for nice walks and bird watching, and you may visit Chatillon sur Chalaronne

- go to Pérouges, a beautiful medieval city (and taste their cake speciality in the afternoon)

- if you like wine and vineyards, go to the Beaujolais (nice villages with %26quot;golden%26quot; stone%26quot;) or south to the Rhône valley : and taste wines in the cellars

- if you like remembering of Roman times, go to Vienne : the museum of Saint Romain en Gal is splendid

A little farther (more or less two hours drive):

- go south to the Drôme provençale, a beautiful region with olive trees and castles : Mirmande, Grignan, Dieulefit

- go east to Chambéry or a little farther to Annecy

And have a look on Lyon website, you will find other ideas:

only-lyon - thanks so much for your information. We enjoy visiting small towns, driving through countryside, stopping at vineyards for a taste of wine, anything related to history, small cafes or local places for good eating, walking/strolling wherever possible and anything/any place to %26quot;get the feel%26quot; for the area.

Well, I%26#39;am pretty sure you will enjoy almost all my suggestions !

Bonjour, only-Lyon

I%26#39;ll be spending five and a half days in Lyon, then a week in Paris, in January 2008. I would like to ask a few questions about Lyon. (I%26#39;ll be on public transport)

1) what%26#39;s the best way of getting from the airport in Lyon to the city centre?

2) of the day trips you mentioned in your earlier post: I%26#39;m planning at least one day trip (Pérouges), and also giving some thought to Chatillon sur Chalaronne, Vienne, Chambéry or Annecy. Given that I have only a few days in the area (I estimate that two or three days will be spent in Lyon), which of those destinations would you recommend for a day trip? (my personal interests are photography, poetry, chess, and history) (after taking into account which museums will be open in January?)

Merci beaucoup!

Photographernut, I see you are new on this forum.

You can search this forum with the blank space above. Put your question in it and you will find previous threads on the same subjects.

The question about how to get to/from the airport has been asked many times before. If you have searched by yourself, you would have found this thread for example :

Pérouges is close to Lyon and it is a very little city; it will be a half day trip.

For an additional day trip, and considering the season, I would choose Annecy. The best trip would be : rent a car, get to Chambéry first, it is on your way to Annecy, make a stopover to admire the painted cathedral and have a quick walk in the old city, then visit Annecy, have a nice walk along the lake and come back to Lyon at night.

Merci beaucoup, Only-Lyon.
