Only a day in Paris - What to see? (and where to propose!)

So I%26#39;ve poured through these forums trying to determine what it is I want to see and where I can possibly propose. My problem is with trying to come up with a plan as I don%26#39;t know where everything is located/how much time is needed to visit all of these places. I fly into CDG in the evening and will be staying in the Montparnasse area. I%26#39;ll have the next full day to go around and then have a flight out in the morning on the next day.

First off the list of proposal spots I%26#39;ve come up with from going through the forum:

* The Terrace at the Palais de Chaillot

* Pont Des Arts

* Champ de Mars in front of the Eiffel Tower

* Café de l%26#39;Homme in Trocadéro

* Le Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower

* On a boat tour on the Seine

Would any of these be not a good idea? . . . too out of the way, too crowded, too hard to get a reservation, too cold (I%26#39;ll be going end of December). Also what time does the Eiffel Tower start to sparkle, is it just when it gets dark (I know it starts on the hour)?

And as far as the other places we want to visit our list includes:

Louvre

Musee d%26#39;Orsay

Sacre Coeur

Notre Dame de Paris

Ave des Champs Elysees

Arc de Triomphe

Montmartre

Eiffel Tower

Anything that I missed? Or I should skip? Any particular order I should do these in? Also would it be a good idea to do an organized tour or to go on my own?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you did the hop on hop off bus tour, one of the routes will take you to or near all the places you have on your list. The only place I would leave off, if you are limited in time is Sacre Coeur. There are a lot of people trying to sell you watches etc, who hassle you all the way up the steps to Sac.C. and when we visited, there was rubbish, broken glass etc all over the place, which really detracted from the SC. It%26#39;s not a place I would return to, but everything else on the list I would not hesitate to go back to and see again.

With only one day, the bus tour would save time in walking and you can hop off at those sights and ration your time to fit them all in. The tower I think starts twinkling just before it gets dark, but from memory that was about 10pm in the summer (not sure about December).

Places to propose - Pont d%26#39;arts is quite a busy place, with lots of people sitting on their blankets nibblies and drinks - but maybe on a quiet night or another bridge (maybe someone else can suggest one)....although December probably wouldn%26#39;t be so busy....I remember standing on that bridge with my husband just waiting for the Tower to start twinkling and with all the boats travelling up and down the river, it did feel very romantic (even though lots of others around). Champ de Mars would also be quite busy.

In the JV restaurant might be nice, then you can go to the top of the tower to take in the romance of Paris afterwards..... Good Luck GBLyn

Also, just found this on

You have too many places to see on your list! Unless you do the hop on hop off bus and take a glimpse at them. And that%26#39;s not very romantic...

Only one museum will fit in if you march through it.

Proposing... from those who have done it, I hear that you will

%26quot;know%26quot; when the place, mood, crowd, temperature, wind... is right. A private location would be my favorite, but it depends on the woman.

What I would do if I were you ... well, never mind.

Given what you have decided to do, I would walk from Montparnasse to the Jardin du Luxembourg, having breakfast along the way.

Then head north and east through the 6th, have a look at Notre Dame, cross the Seine, take a left and go to the Louvre. Do not attempt to visit the museum. Have a lok at the outside, go to the gift shop, just , basically, look at it for a while.

Time for lunch; go across rue de Rivoli through the Jardin du Palais Royal, and have lunch at A Priori-Thé 35-37, Passage Vivienne.

Walk southwest through the Jardin des Tuileries, cross the Seine and go to the Musée D%26#39;Orsay. It is tempting to go in, as it is smaller and more accessible than the Louvre, you decide. At least check it out as you did the Louvre.

After the Orsay, go west and south on rue St Dominique towards the Tour Eiffel. It is a great street with many shops, restaurants, etc.

It wil be dark by 5 p.m. and you%26#39;ll be in easy range of the Tour. Walk northwest through the Champs de Mars, under the Tour, across the river, through the Trocadéro, take a left and you%26#39;re at Cafe de l%26#39;Homme. That is your best place to do it, IMO, if not before in the Champs de Mars with a bottle of champagne (and glasses) that you buy in Rue St Dominique.

After dinner you are within easy distance of the Arc and Champs Elysées, just walk up avenue Kléber.

Total distance walked : less than 7 miles.

You don%26#39;t say when you are coming to Paris. If it is before the end of the year, the Jules Verne is definitively not a spot for you. it is closed for renovation and will reopen for NYE.

As other posters said, far too many places to visit with only one day. Except if it is raining that day, I would skip all museums and just have a nice stroll in Paris.

|||

First off thanks for the responses, this is really helping. It sounds like I should skip the Sacre Coeur so I%26#39;ll scratch that off the list. And going into the museums doesn%26#39;t sound really practical, though I kind of had a feeling that it would be the case. And m.giroux that plan sounds really good, I just traced the plan on the map and it seems like a great way to maximize our time. One thing I was wondering is whether or not it would be useful to get a open bus tour pass or ride the metro to these locations or if its better to walk?

Also I am leaning towards proposing at Cafe de l%26#39;Homme, though I want the first time she sees the tour sparkle be when I propose. Any ideas on what time this would be?

And we will be coming in on the 21st, which is a Friday around 7:30 in the evening. Is there anything else that we could/should visit in the Montparnasse area that we could do on Friday night?

|||

The Eiffel tower sparkles on the hour,every hour of darkness till late.

Better use the normal buses to get about and sightsee out the window.

If M Giroux has you walking 7 miles you won%26#39;t be fit to celebrate properly when you get back to your room.

My fiancée proposed to me at the beginning of Nov on the Ferris Wheel (Grande Roue) at Place de la Concorde in between the Louvre and Arc de Triomphe. You get your own little seat/booth thing so I think he picked it because it%26#39;s one of the few places where it%26#39;s a bit private and there aren%26#39;t hoards of other tourists around you. It was night time too so very pretty and romantic with all the sparkly lights of Paris below. Bit cold though...

|||

I%26#39;ve heard the rides from and to the airport is long, so consider spending 2-3 hours commuting both ways, I am going to Paris for a week and then flight to Frankfurt and to be sure I%26#39;l%26#39; ask the taxi service to take me to CDG 3 hours before departure

I proposed to my fiancee on the steps of the Trocadero. Much to my surprise most people stood on the central part of the Trocadero leaving the steps at the side completely empty.

We sat on the steps overlooking the Eiffel Tower where we talked about old times, then when the Eiffel Tower began to sparkle on the hour I got down on one knee and proposed.

There was no another person in sight, it was (in my opinion) very romantic and private, but very very cold..

That was in the middle of November... she said yes :)
