Loire by car - next week

We have foolishly arranged our travel bookings to have time in Loire next week (1st week in Dec) from a Sunday to a Thursday (not realising at the time that car hire places do not hire on a Sunday). Our accommodation in Loire is not booked yet.

I am hoping someone who has been there can tell me - is it reasonable to spend the Sunday night in Tours, pick up the car there on Monday, %26amp; return it to Chinon before training it back to Paris on Thursday morning? Or should we just pickup %26amp; return at Tours %26amp; go to Chinon in between? %26amp; do we need to make accommodation bookings or can we jsut wing it?

Why Tours? Because it seems easy to get the train there %26amp; being a bigger town it may have more happening on a Sunday?

Why Chinon? For the wine ;)

That%26#39;s a very reasonable approach - also, there are places within Paris that would rent you a car on a Sunday, but that would mean driving in Paris (although a Sunday should be much easier than other days).

%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;a bigger town it may have more happening on a Sunday%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

I love staying in Tours. Look for Place Plumereau in Old Tours, it should be animated even Sunday evening.

I would rent %26amp; return the car to Tours %26amp; avoid drop-off charges. There are many more trains from Tours than from Chinon.

It%26#39;s all of 50km or so from Tours to Chinon -- an easy day trip (or less!)

Hire and return in Tours, then take the train back to Paris.

Mazzy. definately hire and pick up from Tours. It will save you time and hassle - and there is always the risk that if you want to catch the train from Chinon you will have to cross town because the train to Paris leaves from the other station. Plus, of course, you will already know where the hire place is.

This time of youre youre probably safe winging it - you will find accomodation. Whether the accomdation is what you want and where youw ant it is a different matter,

Check the http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/index.htm site. Logis de France hotels are usually small, reasonably priced and family run. It%26#39;s a sign I look for if I need accomodation in France. Ive never had a bad one - and some are brilliant price and quality wise.

For accommodation issues, I would suggest also posting (and searching) on the TA Loire Valley forum - it%26#39;s not nearly as active as the Paris forum but you may get some additional insights there. Good luck and have fun.

For a wonderful place to stay in the Loire, look up Chateau des Ormeaux, near Amboise. www.chateaudesormeaux.fr/accueil_eng.php It was a TripAdvisor 2006 Travelers Choice winner - if you look up the reviews you will see why. I spent 3 nights there in Sept. of 2006 with my husband and another couple. We all thought it was ideal. Raise a glass of Sancerre for us!
