Burgundy vsLoire canal in France

We will be renting a self drive canal boat in June for the first time time and wondering which of the two valleys (Burgundy or Loire) offer the most charm, the best scenery, wine, food and proximity to towns. Since we have not committed to any boat company yet, we would also appreciate any input on style or company to rent from. Much appreciated . SSS

You really need to get your hands on a good map of both regions (not just an overall map of France) and a guidebook, preferably something like the Michelin Green Guide, again a separate one for eacch region. An overall guide will not give you enough detail. You may be able to borrow the guidebooks from your local library and a good bookshop e.g. Borders should be able to help with the Michelin 1:275 000 scale regional maps. (Or you might be able to borrow a Michelin road atlas from your library.)

It is really impossible to say which is %26quot;best%26quot; or has the %26quot;most charm%26quot; since these things are so subjective. I like both areas enormously. To be fair the wines of Burgundy are unsurpassed as is the food. You can eat very well in the Loire area, a gentler and more subtle cuisine as is the region generally, but the food in Burgundy is more likely to knock your socks off so to speak.

Anyway, armed with the maps and guidebooks you can begin to make an informed decision about which area has more to offer to *you*. What I think is really completely irrelevant especially since I know nothing of your personal tastes or interests.

Looks like we are in the same boat :-)

We are renting an America 50 Excellence from Alpha-Croisiere from Tournus starting June 14th 08, for one week.

As it%26#39;s still a few months away, we haven%26#39;t decided which way to go yet, but are leaning towards heading North rather than south.

How are your plans coming along?
