I am going to Val d%26#39;isere on the 30th November to work for 5 months, can anybody give me any helpful hints about the resort, is it expensive? Whats the temperature like? Are there many hairdressers, beauty salons, shops? Whats the night life like can you tell me of any good bars or cheap places to eat? Any advice would be good, what clothes do you recommend I take? Thank you

hi , you will have a great time in Val although i have not stayed there for a couple of years, shopping in Val is quite varied actually as there are shops where taking out a second mortgage would be helpfull and at the other end you can find very resonably priced goods in the shops which are located just outside the main shopping area, also i think there is a market on saturdays. As for the beauty side of things there is a gym/tanning salon/massage facilities somewhere i am told.
Val also has many places to eat to suite most budgets, but if you have the use of a car i would advise doing a weekly, fortnightly or monthly shop down at Super U in Bourg Saint Maurice down the valley ( around 25 minutes drive in good weather and traffic ,but avoid this on a saturday unless you go early in the morning as i have seen traffic cues from seez just outside Bourg St Maurice to Tignes and Val in bad weather on busy transfer days) this will prove a cheaper way of doing a major grocery shop than doing one in Val.
As far as nightlife i can remember a bar called the Alpaka run by swedes or danes i think which was very good.,for more information you can e-mail the val d%26#39;isere tourist office on - info@valdisere.com , or if you type in l%26#39;office du tourisme Val Disere into the google search it will bring up the tourist information centre website address just click on this and then click the little union jack to get the english version.
hope this is of some use to you,and wish you all the best for your season in Val
mny regards

hi me again, sorry forgot to mention the weather- in this part of the alps the temperature can vary from +2-4 degrees approximately to as low as minus 15 or 20 degrees depending on the month and weather patterns, and can be clear and sunny in the morning and blizzards in the late afternoon and vice versa so really just need to take a mix of clothing. But i would suggest you take a good sturdy pair of waterproof but breathable walking boots with good deep grip on the soles( a fairly decent pair for the job should not cost the earth in fact Super U in Bourg Saint Maurice sell good pairs for around twenty to twenty five quid),also a warm hat will be of use that can be pulled down over your ears as the ears are easily affected by the cold and wind and obviously gloves aswell. If you layer your clothing ie. a light t-shirt or long sleeved top next to your skin and then a medium thickness fleece or jumper and then a light to medium weight waterproof breathable jacket you should be comfortable in most types of weather the alps can throw at you, with regards to the outer jacket if you can get one that comes down to just below your hips this will help keep the wind/cold and snow from making your lower back cold and wet when sitting on chairlifts when you are skiing
many regards again

Does anyone know whether the resort will be open then? ski lifts and areas etc plus the restaurants?
Anyone there now who can advise whether you have any snow yet?
Thanks
John
