Amboise without a car?

we are taking the train from paris for a 3 day stay. Our first visit to the area. Is it necessary to rent a car to get to Amboise? do we need a car in the area (we plan on taking one of the tours to see the area).

I would forget the tour, pick up a map and car and explore on your own, it is such a beautiful area

With a tour, you see what someone else thinks you should see, when they think you should see it.

Rent a car and enjoy.

It would be possible to stay in Tours without a car as there are numerous buses to the chateaux and much to do otherwise. I should not recommend visiting Amboise without a car, particularly for 3 days.

Ideally you can rent a car in Paris and drive to the Loire Valley and save the cost of the train. However if you are arriving from North America, driving on the day of your arrival is not recommended due to the dangers of fatigue.

If you do rent a car, arrange in advance of your departure and contact one of the following:

Just back from Amboise.

Do as everyone says and rent a car.

It is not really possible to get a great impression of the area without.

I agree totally that you can do wine visits far better yourself-and it is much more fun.

This gives some good info (in French) about producers and addresses but you can also just tour round and trust your judgement and pop in to wine caves.

I know from your previous postings that , like myself, you enjoy French wine; but I think you may have opened your bottle a bit too early today. Nobody was asking about wine tours!

|||

Sorry got my posts mixed up - but I really had not started on the wine early.

Thanks for the message

Thanks for the information. since this will be at the end of our trip and not the beginning I will look into renting a car in Paris.

ok, so stupid question.

When renting a car in france do they have cars with automatic transmission or are they all manual? (never did learn how to drive one of those!)
