why should i go to lyon?

thinking about visiting france but not sure which part should i go to lyon or somewhere else?

France is an enormous place, with far more regions and specialties packed into one area than the size of that area would suggest.

Take a look at some of the tourism sites

www.francetourism.com

And familiarise yourself with some of the regions -- it%26#39;s just too big and diverse a country to pin it down that quickly.

What do you like to do? How much time do you have? How much are you budgeting? How many people are traveling? What are their ages?

Too many questions to give you a suggestion -- perhaps a visit to a travel agency might give you more brochures and things to consider, as well as a visit to the travel section of a bookstore.

I agree with Sunshine, you should tell us a little more about what you like to do and to see!

Of course I would encourage you to come to Lyon, for several reasons:

- It is a beautiful city, with 2 rivers and 2 hills, a very well preserved Renaissance district and roman theaters; the whole city center is a world heritage site; have a look at the website:

http://www.en.lyon-france.com/

- It is famous for its gastronomy, there are lots of very good restaurants

- It is a very good base to discover beautiful regions, there is a variety of landscapes around Lyon: go to the the Alps for mountains and lakes (I recommend a trip to Annecy) to the the Drôme Provençale for olive trees and lavender or Ardèche for cannyoning. Make a search on this forum, you will find my previous touring recommendations.

Pick up a copy of the Michelin Green Guide to France and do some preliminary research. When you find interesting places, return here with specific questions and you%26#39;ll get lots of help.

Lyon is a large city with notable food, if that%26#39;s what you want.

|||

There%26#39;s a very old saying that if the heart of France is in Paris, then its stomach is in Lyon.

After you visit Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière, you can walk your way down the twisty road of the garden to old Lyon. The streets there are a joy to wander, and there are many food options available as well. Also, Les Halles de Lyon is a food market where you can sample oysters, hot soups, cheese, sausages, paella, etc. A lot of locals also come here to buy bread and meat. The well-known shops are located at center Bellecour area.

After many visits to France I finally made it to Lyon in September and really enjoyed it. The old town is beautiful with the river on both sides. Restaurants were excellent and good value. The cathedral on the hill overlooking the city is stunning and gives a good view of city. It is easy to get to from Paris by TGV and has some good flight connections to the UK. Accommodation seemed reasonably priced and the public transport is pretty good with Metro and Tramways. I give it the thumbs up!

Well , the OP did not come back to the post, but I must say I am impressed and very happy with all your arguments, all of you Lyon lovers from the USA, China and Australia!

You will find all the events on Lyon official website. I think it is a little early to have all events scheduled, you should search later in 2008. Here are the scheduled events in June :

There is also a %26quot;kids special%26quot; on the site that you may browse for your 6 years old.
