Restaurant suggestions - family friendly, serving fish?

Hi,

We%26#39;re taking a family trip to Germany and Alsace in about a month. We%26#39;ll be doing a lot of driving/touring around so all suggestions in the area are useful. We%26#39;re looking for places with good food where we won%26#39;t feel out of place having our well behaved 18 month old daughter along with us. We%26#39;d also like it if there are at least a couple of fish selections on the menu.

Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions.

Hi

I%26#39;m Lionel, i actually live in Alsace. I%26#39;d be happy to help but you need to be more precise, there are hundreds of good restaurant il alsace and it%26#39;s hard to give you a specific location. Children in restaurant are not a problem at all here, as long as your baby don%26#39;t cries for hours...

Regarding fish, most of the restaurants do propose fish, it won%26#39;t be a problem. Feel free to give me more specific locations if you want some good places to go

Hi Lionel,

Thank you for the kind offer. Basically we%26#39;ll have a car, and will likely stick to Strasbourg, the wine route and maybe Colmar. We%26#39;re looking to find something a little above average foodwise, but still comfortable with our daughter. We aren%26#39;t sure of when we%26#39;ll be anywhere ready for a meal, so if a place is only open for dinner, can you let me know that? We were in Alsace a few years ago (its very beautiful - I envy you living there) and loved it, but I did find that there was a lot of meat on the menus, so something that tended to be a little more fish oriented than usual would be helpful. I don%26#39;t want to spend an entire week eating trout every dinner.

Not to worry on the crying. Our daughter has been to many restaurants from an early age, and learned that the minute she starts to make a fuss, she is taken outside until she calms down. We stick with this no matter what.

Hi

I%26#39;ve to admit it, Alsace is a region were meat and sausage ( basically not very diet food) are very popular. As i said you can easily find fish dishes in many restaurant, you can even go in some restaurant specialised in fish. Still you have to know that basically fish is more expensive than meat in Alsace ( sea is quiet far !!)

Basicaly, you can go in any restaurant both for lunch and diner, but be carefull it%26#39;s usually hard to be served between 3 pm and 6 pm and you will have difficulties to find restaurant serving you after 10pm. Notice that a lot of restaurants are closing on sunday evening.

In Strasbourg i know many good adresses so it%26#39;s hard to give you one. What you have to do is avoid at all cost restaurant around Strasbourg%26#39;s cathedral they are overpriced tourist trap., if you like fish i know a small portugese restaurant that will serve you the best fish you ever had, but it%26#39;s not in the most touristic part of the city ( but not far)

Considering colmar maybe you should try an other city like obernai for exemple, Colmar is not that beautiful except for christmas.

If you want some good adresses in Strasbourg or other questions about your trip in Alsace fell free to ask me. I like to help people coming here cause i%26#39;m sure this part of France is as beautiful if not more than more celeb places like Paris or the Cote d%26#39;azur. And it%26#39;s always a good way to meet people

regards

Hi Lionel,

I%26#39;d LOVE to know more about the Portugese restaurant. And I agree - the area around the cathedral was nice to sit and have a beer and look at how beautiful it was, but it was very forgettable food-wise.

Since we%26#39;ll have our daughter with us and don%26#39;t have any specific schedule, we%26#39;ll just have to try to be sure to get lunch in before 2:30 each day (and maybe I%26#39;ll have to cook on Sunday - we%26#39;ll be staying in a place with a kitchen).

Again - your helpfulness is so very appreciated,

We dined at a great vegetarian restaurant near the cathedral in Strasbourg called Poeles de Carottes. It was kid friendly and very casual, but small. It is at: 2, Place de Meuniers (67000) Reviews can be found here: http://www.happycow.net/reviews.php?id=880

Agreed with other responses: Along the wine route you can usually find casual dining with fish dishes in many of the towns. Try to take the time to look around, and at several menus, before settling on a restaurant.

Lionel--

I too would be interested in restaurants in Strasbourg. Our requirements are not strict. We just would like to find decent food in places that are not too touristy, or too expensive.

The Portuguese resto you mentioned sounds pretty good.

It doesn%26#39;t take much to make us happy. A good crepe from a stand on the street, a cafe where we could get a hot chocolate or coffee, maybe a sandwich or something informal, is fine for us.

Anything but McDonald%26#39;s, please! I don%26#39;t even go to McDonald%26#39;s in the States!

Hi galan

Very hard to answer your question.

You have tons of restaurant in Strasbourg. The best is to check the menu before you go and the crowd. Generaly a full restaurant is a good restaurant. Try to avoid restaurant near the cathedral, as i already said they are overpriced tourist trap.

I can give you some good adresses but hard to say if you don%26#39;t have more precise idea the best is to trust your instinct

Lionel--

We will look around. As long as I am not in a McDonald%26#39;s, I%26#39;m happy.

Are there any places that you would recommend that are on the island but NOT near the cathedral? Our hotel is going to be very near the cathedral, if not directly across the street from it (I judge that from looking at a map; I%26#39;m not really sure).

Thanks again to everyone for your help. I%26#39;m going to see if we can find the portugese place, and second will be the vegetarian one. We%26#39;re big fans of Portugese food, and especially the fish dishes. We%26#39;ll be there in two days and are really looking forward to our trip. Lionel especially - you have been so wonderfully helpful. If we were without our toddler I%26#39;d take you for a drink, but since we%26#39;re not, please lift a glass in your honor on me.
