I will be traveling to Paris during the holidays and I will be bringing some expensive jewelry as Christmas gifts. Does this pose an issue in terms of customs when arriving in Paris?

Possibly if you decided to engage in a lengthy conversation with a customs agent. However, I have passed French customs countless times and have only rarely seen an agent and have never actually talked with one.
French customs is virtually non existent for inbound US passengers.

I think the answer is somewhere in here http://www.douane.gouv.fr/data/file/1636.pdf from the French customs website - I love translations of officialese!

Don%26#39;t forget NOT to wrap gifts prior to leaving the US, or the security check may unwrap them.
It would be a good idea to bring receipts, if you still have them.

I have never stopped at customs when leaving baggage claim - just walk on out! I assume these items will be in your hand carried bag, however, so the advice about leaving it unwrapped is sound because if it%26#39;s anything that could set off a metal detector the TSA people at your departure likely will insist that it be opened (you can always carry nice gift bags, or even some sheets of wrapping paper if there is something you specifically wanted to use, in your checked luggage).
