Hi All
Have spent a few hours (read many) trolling through the posts and got some great tips and advice for our trip next year. Now I need some help getting to specifics. We are spending 18 days in France and had intended concentrating on the South but due to a lack of flights out of Nice we are now booked to leave from CDG, Paris. We are aiming to see and experience the %26quot;real%26quot; country rather than just the tourist high spots. To give you some idea we loved all the small towns of back country America on a recent trip across the south west but absolutely hated Las Vegas.
We are flying into Zurich from Dubai a 6 hour flight origionally with the intention of then flying on to Geneva to start our French trip. My husband wants to drive through mont Blanc tunnel....yip...you guys have strange requests some times but hey who am I to argue.
I am wondering if Geneva is a good spring board or should we just pick up our rental in Zurich and head straight to the alps area near the tunnel. Is this a feasible drive after a med length flight, we arrive at lunch time. We have four nights available before arriving at a villa for a week in Chateauneuf-Villevieille, Cote d%26#39;Azur. So were thinking maybe three nights in one area to relax and do some day tripping then another night half way between the Savoy and the south coast.
Any ideas on a charming, interesting place or hotel to stop. Budget is around 150 euros per night.
After our villa we have 6 nights before flying out of Paris. Seems that a TGv trip from Avignon is advised in the forum when time is short. I was thinking along the line of maybe a two night stay near Avignon with maybe a daytrip out to the villages of the Ardeche then the train to Paris for the last four nights.
Any ideas for alterations to these plans would be much appreciated.:-)

Did you know that the Euro08 the Euroepean Football (soccer) Championships will take place in June 2008 in Switzerland and Austria? Zurich, Bern and Geneva are host cities, so don%26#39;t try to go there by car.
I guess a nice start is at the other end of the lake around Montreux and Vevey. It%26#39;s at the entrance of the alps, with a mild climate, many flowers, the wineyards of the Lavaux and nice mountain trips. From here it%26#39;s just an hour by train to Geneva. See ww.region-du-leman.ch
Other option are towns in the lower Valais for example Martigny see www.matterhornstate.com and www.martignytourism.ch, or obvious and already in France: Chamonix right at the tunnel see www.chamonix.com
I guess it%26#39;s up to you to decide how much you want to drive on the first day. For routing information see www.viamichelin.com. I would also have a look at euro08 games (drawing is on Dec 2). Specially on a day with Italy or France playing in Switzerland roads could be pretty full.
Switzerland has a great public transport (see www.sbb.ch/en) and to drop off the car in a other country can be pretty expensive. You could do the Swiss part by train and rent the car in France (Chamonix or around Geneva, for example at the aiport).
France is pretty big, put a separate post in the French Alps (or the Switzerland) forum. The fastest (but mostly not scenic) way from the tunnel to Chateauneuf-Villevieille is via Italian motorways.
I hope that helps a little bit.

That%26#39;s a great help, many thanks. No I did not know about the football competition. Aaargh lol that certainly helps me to decide to stay away from those areas and head into the hills instead. Local advise turns up trumps again.
