Best middle-priced hotel in central Lyon?

I am having a hard time deciding between hotels in the center of Lyon because each of them seems to have some oddity or problem in the tripadvisor.com reviews. I was wondering about the size of the rooms at St. Paul which look miniscule on the website. I was also wondering about the Grand Hotel des Terreaux (which, apparently, has no AC in rooms, but which looks very comfortable on the website). Size of bed and room and shower matters because my husband is 6%26#39;3%26#39;%26#39; and we are traveling with two friends, one of whom is even taller. I know French hotel rooms and showers do tend to be small compared to the US, but was hoping - ideally - for (a) not-cramped room in (b) quiet part of center, walkable to Vieux Lyon if not in it and (c) decent-sized shower (not one of those cabinets that make you bang your elbows every time you move and (d) some character, not just IKEA style. If such a place doesn%26#39;t exist, is it worth putting out the extra money for a place like the Sofitel?? Thank you.

|||

When do you plan to come to Lyon ? If it is not in July/August, you may not need A/C ?

What is your price range ?

The Grand Hotel des Terreaux is a good choice, I have visited the rooms and bathrooms that are large and nice, especially if you choose a %26quot;Corbeille%26quot; room. But I can confirm they don%26#39;t have A/C in the rooms.

|||

Hello only-Lyon,

Thanks for your reply. We are needing two rooms for three nights at the beginning of October, 2008. I know that%26#39;s not a %26quot;hot%26quot; time of year, but have a memory of France%26#39;s having a terrible heatwave around then a couple of years ago. Am I wrong? Is the Terreaux in a good location? Price range - can pay more than 100 E/night, but cannot afford the luxury places (Cour des Loges). We%26#39;d prefer not as high as 200E night (which is now almost $300 US). Thanks again.

|||

You will definitively not need A/C at he beginning of October. The terrible heatwawe we had in 2003 was in summertime. The average temperature in Lyon in October is 12 to 14°C.

As you can afford it, I recommend that you pay more for a %26quot;corbeille%26quot; room at the Grand Hotel des Terreaux.

I think that Les Terreaux is a good location, as you will be close to everything : an easy walk to the market along the Saône, just a bridge to cross to be in the old town. It is a very lively neighborhood with a lot of bars and restaurants, even a jazz club in the same street.

I have no personnal interest in this hotel, but had good PM from visitors who stayed there. I have visited the rooms before recommending it.

The pros :

- entirely refurbished, some rooms are very large (as you book very long in advance, you%26#39;ll be able to choose)

- very friendly staff, english speaking

- in the middle of everything, just walk out the door

The cons

- It is a personal opinion, but I don%26#39;t like the swimming pool near the breakfast room

- It is not the quietest part of the city, but the very center (depends on what you like)

The alternative could be a Mercure hotel, not as expensive as a Sofitel, for example the Beaux-Arts :

mercure.com/mercure/…fiche_hotel.shtml

or the Plazza République :

mercure.com/mercure/…fiche_hotel.shtml

They are both centrally located.

|||

This is very helpful. Thank you so much for your time.

|||

Travel Lover, you disn%26#39;t ask for a B%26amp;B, but as you mention that you travel with friends, it makes me think of an other accomodation.

There are some urban B%26amp;B in Lyon, this one is very central, on place Bellecour, and is very nice. As they propose 2 rooms, you could rent the 2 and live in a kind of private place as there is a private entrance. The place is just next door to my apartment, it is called %26quot;Bellecour sur Cour%26quot;:

http://www.bellecoursurcour.com/index.htm

Here is the feedback I received from travellers who recently stayed there.

%26quot;As for our accomodations, I highly recommend Bellecour sur Cour. The location is ideal, Patricia (manager) was just lovely and very hospitable. We were in the Pierre room and it is accurately viewed on the website. The rooms overlook the courtyard (which was quiet at night), had internet hook up, was very clean, had a queen sized bed and a fairly new tiled bath/shower. Water was hot with good water perssure. The 2 guest rooms have their own stairway and entance.off the courtyard giving the room the feel of a seperate apartment.

Breakfast was simple and was taken in the main part of the house. It consisted of juice, yogurt, toast or breads, coffee/tea. There is a small pantry area right outside the rooms in the hallway stocked with glasses, mugs, utensils, tea, instant coffee etc. Sherman%26#39;s Travel magazine did an article on Lyon in the September issue and Bellecour sur Cour is one of 3 accomodations mentioned in the article. Thanks again for suggesting Bellecour sur Cour to us.%26quot;

|||

This looks very promising. A perfect location (lucky you!). Thank you again so much. Now I%26#39;ll present all your helpful information to my husband and our friends.

Eurodisney - Children of 1 & 4 years

Hello we are toying with the idea of taking a trip to euro disney in April next year - our children will be then 1year and 4 years old - can anyone advise if there are things to do for this age group - or are we wasting out time and money?

Many thanks for all you kind help

|||

I%26#39;m not a parent, but I can%26#39;t imagine a 1-year old would get anything out of it.... but the 4 yr old probably would...

|||

There are a few rides the four yr old will enjoy( but many she/he will be unable to go on as of height requirements). Also it is %26quot;cute%26quot; and at that age they enjoy seeing the characters. etc.

The one yr old is baby and will get nothing out of it.

|||

We took our 4 year old and our 6 year old and only the 6 year old remember the trip ...the 4 year old remembered from pictures.

Your one year old won%26#39;t be going on rides so either one of you will have to go on the height appropriate rides with the four year old.

I think I would not go till they were a little older.....but then my hubby thinks that Disney should just be for adults who want to be kids!

|||

the one year old will get nothing from the experience

and I do think the 4 year old is also too young -- we took our kids at 4 and 9 to Disneyworld in Florida and the 4 year old had an okay day but was too small for many rides and it was largely wasted on her (we actually paid to send her on a school trip later because we felt at 4 she hadn%26#39;t really had much of an experience there)

if YOU love disney amusement parks then go -- but don%26#39;t go thinking you are doing something for the kids -- the one year old doesn%26#39;t care at all as long as s/he is comfortable and with Mom and Dad -- the 4 year old would probably have lots more fun at one of the zillions of small playgrounds all over Paris -- for free

|||

Thank you all for your thoughts, will probably give it a miss until the little ones are a bit older. Appreciate everyone%26#39;s help

Need help on where to stay...

Hi, my boyfriend and I are spending 5 days in Paris in Jan08 and need some help! I%26#39;ve been to Paris before, but that was when I was 12 and so this time want to go back and experience things properly for myself. He has never been and so will probably want to see all of the main sights, eiffel tower etc etc.

I was planning to book a hotel in the 7th area near the eiffel tower. We are looking for a budget hotel that is clean and basic... but preferably near sights and the metro.

After reading some reviews on here I%26#39;m a little put off by the 7th area as people have said there isn%26#39;t much to do there, other than the eiffel tower. I%26#39;ve heard that perhaps the latin quarter or somewhere like that will be better for more sights and to experience the real paris.

We%26#39;d like to be in the centre of the sights, quite close to everything. Saying that, we are not huge fans of museums, maybe we might visit one but we don%26#39;t want to be located somewhere that is entirely dominated by museums. We are 18 and so would like somewhere that has a nice night life also.

Any suggestions would be grateful.

|||

The 7th is not a good area for young people. Very residential and quiet. Stay in the Latin Quarter or near Rue Mouffetard (also in the 5th arr.) or in the Marais.

You can see the Eiffel Tower from everywhere and walk to it.

|||

yes i absolutely suggest you to stay in the 6th ...unfort, can%26#39;t give you an idea about hotels because we usually rent an apart, but TA people will be glad to post some addresses. When in the 6th, go to the St Germain Pub for a drink, as you are 18, you%26#39;ll love the ambiance ...

|||

Dear Vctorriane;

I think 18 year olds would love the Latin Quarter, aka the 5th. The Rue Mouffetard is lively and the neighborhood interesting. It is also close to the sights, but not museum bound. You are close to both the 6th Arrond., the Ile St. Louis (charming) and across the Seine, on the other side, is the Marais, another great neighborhood.

Bon chance and bon voyage!

Vacation in Paris (vacationinparis.com) Apartment Question

Hello! Another poster suggested I bullet out the following question from a separate post. We%26#39;re evaluating different apartments for our February stay in Paris, and I%26#39;m looking for some feedback:

Has anyone stayed in the following apartments: 65, 100, 112, or 122? We%26#39;re hoping to be pretty centrally located, and I%26#39;m having a hard time justifying anything over $150/night.

I%26#39;ve already heard some good things about 100 -- thanks!

|||

You will get a lot of positive feedback on No. 122. I have not stayed in that one, but I have stayed in that location (across the street) and liked it a lot - it%26#39;s a short walk to just about everything you want to see, and I%26#39;m planning to get this apartment next time I need one there.

|||

I sent you a personal message.

1st or 6th

I am deciding where to stay for 5 nights in the spring - I am leaning toward the 1st or the 6th. I am travelling with my husband and 3 kids. Two older (21 and 18) will want to explore on their own at night a bit - so I want a safe area and close to things they would like to do at night. Also, third child is in a wheelchair, so we want to be withing walking/rolling distance to as manysights and restaurants as possible.

your inputs are much appreciated.

Tracie

|||

It all depends on the address. I would think that a 21 and an 18 years old would be happier in the 6th at night esp. if you stay near Blvd Saint Germain.

|||

I have stayed in both, and have travelled alone and with friends, and also alone with my 14 yr old.

The 6th gets my vote.

Close to lots of interesting shops, cafes, Notre Dame( which is not in sixth but just walk over the bridge, same with Louvre and St Chapelle) book stores , restaurants etc. You can also walk to the Cluny, and the Orsay and Rodins. I tend to walk alot so for me I found this area so central.

The 1st seemed boring in evening, all there seemed to be was a strip along Rue Du Rivoli with tshirt and souvenir shops. This is just my opinion.

In the 6th the older teens( although the 21 yr old is now actually an adult LOL) can wander around the area and find lots of things to poke around,, plus I consider it very safe.

Seriously consider suggesting the older kids take a %26quot;Fat Tire Bike tour%26quot;, we did Paris at Night and LOVED it ( we are middle aged) we were definately in the older set, guides are all young American college age type students, they made Paris so fun ,just enough tidbits of knowledge to make the tour interesting and more then enough thrills to make it fun.

It was only 25 euros each and you do not have to book or pay ahead. They have a website so just google them something the kids could do at night without you guys and really enjoy!

|||

Here are the city bus lines with handicapped access.

www.ratp.info/orienter/accessibilite.php…

|||

I vote for the 6th too. On a family trip to Paris in 2004, we stayed on the Rue St. Andre des Arts, which turns into the Rue de Buci. This is a great lively area between Place St. Michel and St. Germain des Pres, and your older children would certainly find plenty to do here in the evenings. It%26#39;s also very close to Notre Dame and la Sainte Chapelle, Ile St. Louis, the Luxembourg Gardens, the Musee Cluny, the Seine, etc. etc. If the weather is nice, you will really enjoy walking and rolling through the Luxembourg Gardens.

|||

If you look on any good Paris street map (you%26#39;ve already got one...right??...it ain%26#39;t as if you won%26#39;t need it for general planning and touring purposes) you%26#39;ll see that the 1er-Louvre / Tuileries and the 6eme-Saint Germain des Prés are just across the Seine from each other. So the neighborhoods of either will be equally safe and convenient for your purpose (in either case, the closer to the Seine the better)...and they will flow almost seamlessly together. Either area will be within easy strolling / walking distances of a great many of Paris%26#39; many great treasures and many small pleasures...and also provide excellent public transportation connections (RER, Metro, Bus) to %26#39;..everywhere else in Paris..%26#39; when you feel compelled to venture out to Paris%26#39; other great neighborhoods.

But of the two, like others, we have a decided %26#39;..Left Bank..%26#39; preference for the neighborhoods of the upper-6eme--Saint Germain des Prés on the Left Bank. These neighborhoods are livelier, more interesting and when strolling or walking, flow seamlessly along the Seine into other interesting neighborhoods of the upper-5em-Latin Quarter, 4eme-Iles / lower-Marais and 1er-Louvre / Tuileries.

You%26#39;ll also fine a broad selection of good hotels in a variety or categories and price ranges to suit most budgets. The neighborhoods of the upper-6eme have more than enough good restaurants, bistros and cafés to choose from, within easy strolling / walking distance of your hotel, to satisy almost any taste, appetiti or budget; more than enough interesting shopping opportunities to max-out all but AMEX %26#39;black%26#39;...and lively and interesting entertainment and %26#39;..street theater..%26#39; in the evenings to keep you amused

The 1er-Louvre / Tuileries tends to be largely institutional / commercial and as such, there%26#39;s a bit less to do in the immediate neighborhoods in the evenings.

|||

Dear Tramac:

I%26#39;ve stayed in both the 1st and the 6th, and enjoyed both of them. In the 1st, I stayed at the Relais du Louvre, which is 1 block from the Seine and next door to the Louvre. It is just across the Pont Neuf to the Left Bank, so is very central. I will second the advice KDSail gave you.

Bon chance and bon voyage!

|||

I agree with La Photographe, it all depends on the address.

The 1st near Le Louvre is mostly sad at night, except one night bar I like close to Le Louvre, le Fumoir. But not the rue des Petits Champs is nice (go to Willis Wine bar). And the 1st close to the 2nd is very lively, a lot of bars and restaurants rue Tiquetonne, rue Montorgueil, etc.

I don%26#39;t need to recommend the 6th, everybody did already!

day trip to paris/will transit strike effect it?

Hello,

My family and I ( 2 adults and 12 year old) are leaving for london 11/20 , this is our first trip. We have decided that we would love to take day trip to Paris on Eurostar.

I am looking at booking Premium tours or Golden tours day trip, do you think that the strike will effect the tours that are booked?

I have not booked it yet, or should I wait until I get to London to book the tour.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

|||

My understanding is that the Civil Servants will be stiking in Paris on the 20th and the transit strike my still be on then as well. So if you plan to book it do not take it on the 20th. If you are leaving on the 20th you could check out the various strike status on the 19th and then make a decision before you leave or wait until you get to London and book it then.

Ski Insurance - Age problem

Hi,

My husband is 71 and it is starting to get difficult getting ski insurance for him, I think we are OK this year but I think we are going to have major problems in the next few years. It seems that the Insurance companies start to write you off if you are 65 plus!!

My husband has been skiing for over 30 years, so have I and our son who is 13/14 has skied every year of his life. My husband is relatively fit and healthy, give him a black run and although slower than he might have been a few years ago, will still get down with no problem.

What do other people do of this age for their Insurance - I look forward to reading your replies.

|||

hi have posted some ideas on your earlier posting

Viva La Strike

Well I leave tomorrow for a trip that I have planning for months. Many thanks to you all of you for advice and tips.

Despite our apartment being cancelled last minute and substituted and despite the strikes we are determined to have a fun and relaxing vacation. (Thank goodness I broke in my walking shoes as I am sure I am going to need them)

My only hope is that the wine will not be on strike ;)

To anyone who will be there this week November 16th-24th and is interested in working together to arrange trips to Versaille and/or Chartres let me know as with more than 2 people savings are much greater on private tours.

Also to those who are begining to plan your trip now keep in mind that no matter how much you plan (for me it was an obsession) there are always things that are out of your control and as my husband says too much planning can be a bad thing. He is right as I am sure this week I might not get to do all of the things on my rather lengthy list but I know I will not be running from place to place to cram everything in and it gives me a chance to sit and relax. Afterall isn%26#39;t that what a vacation should be :)

|||

KimbaPA: I assure you the wine will not be on strike! Just go to the Nicolas on Ile St Louis, get a good bottle (and some cheese at B. Lefranc, and some bread at one of the boulangeries) and enjoy your balcony overlooking the Seine! (I suspect you will find that your list of things to do actually will make it unnecessary to do much planning for the next two trips - other than of the %26quot;I must go back there%26quot; variety - as you won%26#39;t get to it all but can look forward to doing it %26quot;next time%26quot;!)

Have a really great time.

Help! Going To Paris 16-18 Nov- Strike Advice

Hi there, I usually go to Bercy, Paris this weekend every year for an event at the POPB, obviously there is the possibility of strike action this weekend.

My flight arrives at CDG at 18:00 on Friday, usually I would get a taxi but Im not sure I like the idea of that if the city will be in gridlock, Ive found some shuttle services on the web, will that be a good idea?

Im taking someone who has never been to Paris before and he wanted to sightsee a bit on Saturday - As Line 14 from Bercy is a driverless line, will it be running? Could we say get the line from Bercy to Chatelet, walk to Notre Dame and hop on one of the Bus Tours or are they on strike too?

Thankyou for any advice! xoxox

|||

Strike is starting tonight but should be over by Friday. I (maybe naively) think that the new Sarko governement cannot afford to have this strike paralizing the country. There is a lot to do in Paris even by walking so I would go. Airline buses are supposed to operate and so are taxis and metro line 14.

Look at a French newpaper on line to get update. www.lenouvelobs.com.

You can translate the pages.

|||

I also arrive in Paris this weekend but it is by train from Germany. How will we know if the strike is still going on? Argh...this could get bad. We made dinner reservations for every night...

|||

france24.com/france24Public/en/news/france/2…

|||

I live in Paris and as of today (Thu 15th) line 14 was operating normally. Line 1 was packed but fine, I would avoid it during rush hour (although it was no worse than London on a normal day at rush hour). I wouldn%26#39;t rely on buses which are intermittent and jam packed. As long as you are not in a rush its easy to walk though using line 1 to take you east / west. Wrap up warm, its pretty cold.

Moulin Rouge?

I%26#39;m visiting Paris (have been before) for 2 weeks from late Dec/Jan with my 3 teenage children. I want to take them to a show such as the Lido/Moulin Rouge etc. Which currently - or others - has the best reputation and would be the best for older teenagers? Thanks!

|||

I didn%26#39;t go to the Moulin Rouge but talked to several different people that did and all came back with it being a touristy thing to do and not a lot of fun.

|||

I%26#39;ve seen the Moulin Rouge show and found it to be surprisngly good and very much like a variety show featuring singing, dancing, and comedy routines. There was a mixed crowd when I went both old and young and they all seemed to be having fun.

|||

Thanks for the posts! Yes, I%26#39;m aware that it%26#39;s %26#39;touristy%26#39; and it%26#39;d typically avoid it for that reason, but thought it would be fun and memorable for the teenagers - esp if it%26#39;s glitzy and slick :-)

|||

I went to a cabaret (Paradis Latin) when I was about 15 or 16 (I%26#39;m a girl) and my younger brother was 13 or 14. It was the highlight of the Paris trip for us. :) Have fun!

|||

That sounds perfect - thank you! I%26#39;ve checked out the web-site and will book. Great recommendation!

|||

I have to laugh because we are all always trying to stay away from %26quot;touristy%26quot; things...aren%26#39;t we all tourists?? Gotta do the touristy things once to say it%26#39;s been done, otherwise no one would ever visit the Eiffel Tower. But believe me, I get it.

My real contribution is that kids/teenagers tend to love touristy, glitzy, rowdy, and shows like these are such fun. The Lido is in a great location where you can wander up/down the Champs Elysees after the show. At the same time, the Moulin Rouge is an institution and might seem a little %26quot;racier%26quot; (more appealing to a teen) because of its location. I think either place would be good and the MR might cost less.

|||

Hi FrequentFlyer

Took our 3 teenage kids (18,16,and 12) to Moulin Rouge last year and it was fabulous, one of our highlights.

Booked months before, went early, did the photos outside, then down the road to Wepplers for dinner. Back early for the 9pm show, and we got great seats.

Sure you%26#39;ll love the variety show and of course the can-can etc.

|||

better try Bobino with the dinner ...

I saw on a website that the train goes to Betaille, four km from Carennac. If you google the name of the town %26amp; scroll through you%26#39;ll usually get to traveller/commune info websites which will provide information.

Are you staying in Carennac? we%26#39;re looking for a gite there. Any recommendations?

Regards

New Year's Eve/New Year's Day

hello. ITs been a while. I have been studying furiously over all things Nice and mostly confused but still looking forward to this adventure. Have tried locating websites (dinner reserves) so far only a small handful available and like the Negresco already booked.. Suggestions for New Year%26#39;s Eve? shall we just wing the evening and sneak in anywhere we can or where our hotel sends us? Also, I have noticed postings saying that most everything is closed on New YEar%26#39;s Day? What are we to do. If you tell me to rent a bicycle and ride in the countryside I will cry. Are there restaurants open, should we enjoy very local fare New Year%26#39;s Eve and go for a fabulous outing of food and wine on New Year%26#39;s Day?

|||

New Years eve is party-time - many places - name restaurants and hotels - will be booked for the special menu they put on, and from previous experience even the %26quot;touristy%26quot; restaurants in the Zone Pieton and Cours Saleya will be packed - but if you arrive sufficiently early (7:30?) you should still be able to secure a table as most of these places the tourists just turn up and dont do formal %26quot;booking%26quot;

New Years day is quiet and day of rest. Even the restaurants that open will be on minimum staff and if its the chefs day off, tough. The buses and trains should still be running a restricted %26quot;holiday%26quot; schedule, but a lot of attractions that carry an entry fee and therefore need staff will not open.

Dont ride a bicycle here if you value your life. Walk to Villefranche if its a nice day - the restaurants alongthe quay will be open - some at least.

|||

Hi.

I have just booked for Nice over New Year and have the same problem. LeMaison de Marie has tables but at 125 euros each.Le Tire Bouchon is 92 euros each. Dont know whether to book, wander around and find somewhere or Mcdonalds chips and a bottle of champagne. Not bothered about New Years Day, we will walk, find whatever is open to eat, and wander again, dont mind that, and hopefully go on a tram. Also staying at the Suisse so will have a nice room to go back to.

|||

Suisse? Very nice!

Just be sure to hit the Prom at midnight - bottle of champers in hand. That requires a quick trip to Monoprix - if you dont fancy the 25-30 euro ticket for the real thing a borttle of Italian Prosecco goes just as well - hang on, make that two.

A Macdonalds under Le Meridien and champagne could be good, or hang the formal dinner business and find a good Cave that does nibbles with good wine. There are some interesting ones around Place Wilson and in the sideroads like rue Aliberti

You could try the rave Indian behind Cours Saleya the Delhi Belly - Could be this is not so popular with %26quot;the Continentals%26quot; a New Year

You might also try my recommended Italian, the Baie d%26#39;Amalfi at the corner of rue Pastorelli and Gustave Deloye off the Jean Medecin - they do a New Year s eve special gourmet but must book - they have a website.

(gosh I%26#39;m feeling thirsty already!)

Cheers!

|||

Thanks NiceLife.

|||

thanks too! how wild.. we will all be at the suisse.. it will be fun whatever happens! Can%26#39;t wait.. another thing are nice dress jeans permissable for casual outings and cafe visiting... or will i immediately be labled la tourista? Not that this matters, the second they hear my voice the gig will be up...

VIP apt at ave de suffren - construction noise?

Hi there

My family and I are thinking of renting the above apartment at ave de suffren for 5 nights. They have informed us that there may be some amount of noise from the constructiojn nearby. DOes anyone have any experience with the above property or any locals would know how extensive is the construction? DO construction work in Paris run well into the night?

Thanks!

|||

Not sure what construction you are talking about.

Avenue de Suffren is not a central location.

Construction in Paris is pretty much an 8:00 to 5:00 job.

any suggestions for birthday treat

I would like to take my husband on a romantic short break to paris for his birthday spring 08. I have not been before and I want a romantic setting with top class service, hotel only please. Any suggestions.

Thanks

|||

Dear Senior123,

I am assuming that price is no object. Although I have not stayed at the Pavillion de la Reine, I have been in the lobby, which is lovely. I just read some of the reviews on TA-it is the 13th most popular hotel in Paris. The reviews seem to indicate top class service. I know the area is romantic, as it sits just off the Place des Voges.

Happy birthday to your husband!

Bon voyage and bon chance.

|||

An other romantic place, a little cheaper than Pavillon de la Reine, is the Hotel du Jeu de Paume : staying on the island is the treat !

http://www.jeudepaumehotel.com/

|||

Try the lovely small Hôtel le Madison, on the Blvd. St-Germain-des-Prés. Rooms on the front are beautiful and spacious, for Paris, with large, well equipped bathrooms. Buffet breakfast or continental in your room. Many good restaurants are nearby, as are major tourist sights and the Seine.

Font Romeu

We are two families (group of 10 in total) hoping to travel to Font Romeu for mid-term ski break (Feb 10 - Feb 16). We have booked flights into Barcelona already.

Can anyone please advise good family orientated accom (teenagers included) and reasonable airport transfers from Barcelona to Font Romeu return. Any quote I%26#39;ve got on-line has been circa €1,200 return for transfers!

|||

Not very convenient, Carcassonne would have been more practical, especially if you are flying with Ryanair.

Are you sure it%26#39;s Barcelona and not Girona?

From Barcelona you%26#39;ll have to take a train to Perpignan, then a bus to Font Romeu. Or you could take the train from Perpignan to Villefranche du Conflent, then the little yellow train to Odeillo-Via , then a taxi to Font-Romeu itself. In both cases, it wll take you a day to get there depending on the time you land in Spain.

|||

Thank you very much for this information. I think we%26#39;ll revert to car hire option, journey time is meant to be circa 3 hrs via cadi tunnel.

|||

Make sure you have chains in the car!

|||

Have a look at Les Angles. It is smaller and less busy, but appears more family friendly than FR.

Once you get out of BCN the journey is quite easy. You won%26#39;t need chains until the last couple of miles, unless you are very lucky with loads of snow.

Can a civil servants strike affect major tourist sites?

Going to Paris the last week of Nov. I suppose we can deal with a transit strike, since we are staying at a central location and plan on doing a lot of walking anyways. But having all the major attractions and museums closed would be a major disappointment. We%26#39;ll still make the best of whatever comes, there%26#39;s no turning back now.

Are the workers at these sites civil servants? Are they involved in the current dispute? Are special concessions likely to be made, or have they been made in the past, to keep tourist sites open given that le France is le premier country for tourism in the world?

|||

Are the workers at these sites civil servants? For National Monuments and Museums, yes. The ET, Notre Dame and other churches are not Nat%26#39;l.

Are they involved in the current dispute? Not at the moment.

Are special concessions likely to be made, or have they been made in the past, to keep tourist sites open given that le France is le premier country for tourism in the world? Nope, and they ever would be, as no matter how many tourists there may be in Paris at any one moment, there are still more tax paying voters.

|||

We were in Paris during the strike in October and visited the Louvre. The only galleries open were the special exhibition (Arts de l%26#39;Islam) so we bought the tickets just before 4pm, anticipating a couple of hours to visit ... but they suddenly announced they were closing the galleries at 5pm. We were told it was because of problems with lack of staff able to travel, so I don%26#39;t know whether this would still apply - I haven%26#39;t seen any reports on here that any galleries have been closed during the latest round of strikes, but it%26#39;s always a risk, I suppose. And no, there was no refund.

Cote Chalonnaise vs Cote de Nuits

Hi, I%26#39;d appreciate any advice on choosing one of these areas to visit over the other? I%26#39;m going to Cote de Beaune also. I think my preference would be which area would be more interesting/picturesque instead of basing it purely on the wine tasting. Thanks!

|||

If you are staying around Beaune then I would choose Chalon. Specifically I would go a little farther south and stay in Beaujolais.

If you are looking for a picturesque region with interest then that will not dissapoint you. Beautiful area with high vantage points available for views as well.Some very interesting villages - all wine producers of course!

Really enjoyable to tour in a car or walk around the winding roads and hillsides between the villages.

The Chalon area can be done from there.

You can easily visit Cotes de Nuits from Beaune.

Again a very picturesque area especially away from the main road and into the hillside and villages. For me Beaujolais just has the edge for scenery - probably because you do lose the main road more easily.

Beaujolais has great value wines and from a good producer are wonderful to drink. Chalon has very good wine producers also - whites are good value.

The more %26quot;serious%26quot; (hate that expresion-but you know what I mean) and expensive wines are farther north but we buy from all these areas and the wines in the southern areas are excellent also.

I have some info I can send that is a bit more specific and too long to post - send a message if you want it.

Neal

|||

So, do you suggest staying in Beaujolais instead of Beaune or spend time in both areas? I only have 3-4 nights to spend in Burgundy %26amp; I was thinking of spending 1 of those in Dijon. Should I perhaps see Dijon during the day and then spend the night in Beaune?

Thanks again for any input.

|||

Have send a message.

If you have only 3 or 4 nights you might want to think of basing yourself around Beaune for the whole stay.

The distances are not vast - Beaujolais is only 55mins on the autoroute for instance. You will find you can cover the region quite easily from that central location.

From what you seem to want to see the area around Beaune and south of Beaune would be the area to concentrate on.

Otherwise go for 2 nights Beaune and 2 nights farther south.

Hope this helps

Travel for the elderly

I am 80 years of age and contemplating visiting Etaples Cemetery during May or June 2008. Are there any fully escorted tours for the elderly to this area of France?

|||

Etaples (the largest commonwealth cemetery in France) is easily accessed if this is your concern it is right on a main road and parking is directly outside, no fields or tracks to encounter.

Then (I can%26#39;t remember exactly) but perhaps a dozen steps (not steep) takes you to the entrance and the high point of the cemetery where all the graves can be observed and then if you want down the other side (I think maybe a few more steps down that it was up) into the actual cemetery and gardens.

Regarding tours I%26#39;ve lived here nearly 20 years and haven%26#39;t heard of any, the reason probably is there wasn%26#39;t any %26quot;action%26quot; around there, as you know it was the base camp during WWI for our boys as they arrived in France and had large hospital facilities located here too, the hospital facilities were replicated in WWII also hence the large number of graves.

Maybe the Tourist Office knows of tours? (contact@etaples-tourisme.com) but there isn’t a lot else of military importance in the close proximity.

I live very close and if you want I can e-mail you some photos showing access if this is a worry of yours, just send me an address to (pricealan@wanadoo.fr) and I’ll forward you some pictures.

Tours are widely available on the Somme and at Ypres for WWI battlefields and not to be missed in my opinion (although access to some locations maybe tough going) they can tailor certain parts to incorporate particular interests if you advise in advance.

Tours of the WWI sites are done in mini buses about 9 seats and last either an afternoon or morning or full day dependant on your choice of tour. The number of stops are perhaps a dozen, some you just drive up alongside stop and the guide gives a chat, others are cemeteries so you choise whether you go in or just look over the wall.

I%26#39;ve done this tour on 3 occasions and can only think of two places that may cause problems;

1) Sheffield Park at Serre on the Somme maybe a bit too much dependent on how far the van gets down the lane, but you can just sit that one out.

2) Newfoundland Park is a fair walk around preserved trenches but it has an excellent obseravtion platform about 400 yards from the car park, so no need to do the trench bit.

There are many tours further down in Normandy that cover the WWII theatre.

If I can assist any more just shout

Regards

Alan

family holiday

I am planning a family trip to Lyon with my 6year old. Does any one know of any good places to visit. i have found my accomodation.

|||

Place Bellecour

This is one of the largest squares in France (310 by 210 m) which is dominated by the silhouette of the Fourvières basilica. In the centre the «bronze horse» is the Lyon nickname for this equestrian statue of Louis XIV. It is decorated with bronzes by the Coustou brothers representing the Rhone and the Saone. In front of the Post Office building stands the isolated tower of the old Charity Hospital. BNP has now moved into the rooms where the Lumière brothers gave their first picture shows.

Karen

|||

There is plenty to see and to do in Lyon! I suggest that you start to have a look on my previous posts on this forum, and that you browse this website to get an overview :

http://www.en.lyon-france.com/

After that, I will be very happy to answer to more precise questions.

Of course Karen, everyone goes to place Bellecour, as it is the very center of the city (I live there !).

But it is not the most interesting place for your 6 year old, who will certainly like the painted walls, the funny hidden passageways called the %26quot;traboules%26quot; (like a treasure hunt for kids !), a trip on the river Saône, the parc de la Tête d%26#39;Or or the musée de la Miniature.

|||

we are a family of 5 with 3 children6,8,9 and will stay in lyon for 6 weeks . Where would be the best part of lyon to stay if you would like atmosphere and to walk everywhere, have good little restaurants and perhaps a park close by ?

any recommendations about the different areas??

|||

Are you going to stay in a hotel ? For a 6 weeks stay with children, I think it is worth renting a flat.

What are the best areas to stay with kids ?

First what I don%26#39;t recommend.

- I don%26#39;t recommend the old city district (5th arrondissement). It is easy to go there for visiting and strolling around, enjoying an ice cream, etc, but not so nice to live there (as in most touristic part of city centers) : it is noisy, lots of bars and restaurants and not enough food stores.

- I don%26#39;t recommend the Pentes de la Croix Rousse (north part of the 1st arrondissement). it is a terrific district to go out in bars and alternative theaters, but not very convenient to live in.

You should consider 2 areas :

- The Presqu%26#39;île, that is the part of the city center in between the 2 rivers. I would choose the area between place bellecour and perrache train station. It is a residential neighborhood, you will be in the middle of everything. It is the 2nd arrondissement.

- The left bank of the Rhône, near place Maréchal Lyautey, or even closer to the parc de la Tête d%26#39;Or. It is a more quiet residential area, although an other commercial district with beautiful shops. You will be able to enjoy the beautiful park, but you will be a little away from the old town. It is the 6th arrondissement.

If you need more precise advices with flat addresses, I will be happy to tell you more about the neighborhoods. Because as you can guess, there are pretty much differences within the arrondissements!

Hotel Suggestions

My friend and I are going to Paris mid-January, and we are looking for a small inexpensive hotel that is clean and centrally located. Neither of us has been to Paris before, so suggestions and tips would be greatly appreciated.

|||

There are hundreds, so it would help if you define %26quot; budget%26quot;. What is your nightly budget in euros?

Do you prefer a lively neighborhood or a quiet one.

|||

Hi!

We%26#39;ve been to Paris in August and stayed and Madeleine Plaza hotel (you can find reviews on TripAdvisor about it - including mine!). It is very nice, clean, good breakfast, 10 min walk to Champs Elysee.

Very close to Louvre, River Seine and Champs Elysee (walking distance).

Metro station: 50 m from hotel, Open Bus Tour stop 100 m away from hotel.

Quiet surroundings, no noise during night, nice view of Madeleine Church from rooms, and Eiffel Tour if you stay at higher floors.

We paid approximately 120 eur/room/night - double room including breakfast.

Hotel in latin quarter under £50 a night....??

Hi, I%26#39;m looking to stay in the latin quarter, as near to the seine as possible and close to a metro station for under £50 a night.

I%26#39;m hoping to book online but I don%26#39;t own a credit card, which is turning out to be a problem as most hotel websites only accept visa or mastercard.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

|||

I am not sure about the booking online without credit card. If it is far enough in advance and there are enough vacancies, you might be able to send a bank draft or cheque.

Here are a couple of possibilities near 70 Euros a night - some do not have ensuite bathrooms and are quite like hostels

Hotel Aviatic or Best Western Elysees Bassano

Does anyone have any experience of these two hotels?

Area/hotel itself etc. Which would be the better hotel and area of the two for a family with teens?

|||

You should know that there are TWO hotels Aviatic - One (low-budget) in the rue Brézin, the other (three stars) in the rue de Vaugirard. I%26#39;m fairly certain that you mean the latter, but it can lead to confusion.

Thankyou, it is the one in Rue Vaugirard.

Trendy Area's to stay in Paris???

Hi,

I%26#39;m heading to Paris in a few weeks time for a few nights. Was wondering if anyone could recommend a cool/trendy area to stay.

We are a young couple and enjoy good restaurants and bars. But we would also like to be close to all the attractions. Or if anyone can recommend any cool or funky hotels that don%26#39;t cost a fortune in good areas.

Thanks

|||

Hi,

I%26#39;ve been to Paris in August this year. I recommend the hotel we stayed in: Madeleine Plaza in Place de Madeleine, 5 min walk to Champs Elysee. It%26#39;s a very nice and chic hotel, very nice view (ask for a room at a higher floor). Walking distance to all attractions: Louvre, Champs Elysee, River Seine.

Also at 50 m from the hotel there is a metro stop and at 100 m there is a Tourist Bus(open bus for tours of Paris) stop.

Enjoy!

|||

Tan, you should tell us more about your price range; what do you mean with %26quot;hotels that don%26#39;t cost a fortune%26quot; ?

Here are 3 trendy hotels in young and trendy neighborhoods :

- Kube, 1-5, passage Ruelle 75018 Paris, in the trendy multicultural 18è arrondissement

http://www.kubehotel.com/kubehotel.html

- Hotel Amour 8 rue Navarin 75 009 Paris in the trendy %26quot;south of Pigalle district%26quot;, close to the rue des Martyrs and rue des Abbesses

www.hotelamour.com/Hotel%20Amour/Home.html

- Hotel du Petit Moulin 29/31 rue du Poitou, 75003 PARIS, in the ever trendy Marais, entirely redesigned by Christian Lacroix:

www.paris-hotel-petitmoulin.com/index.html

- An other trendy area is the Bastille / Charonne area, loads of good bars and restaurants, but I can%26#39;t think of a good hotel there. May be this one, that is not a trendy hotel, but is in a trendy area :

Visiting Paris with kids dueing christmas

Hi all

we are visiting paris during christams time for 3 days. We are a family of two couples with two kids (5 and 6 yrs old). We were thinking of visiting eifel tower, versailles palace and may be disney land. CAN YOU PLEASE SUGGEST how should we spend these three days? at this age group%26gt; is disney world enjoyble?

Vikash

|||

Which three(3) days of the week will you be visiting ? (as an example, Chateau de Versailles and Musée d%26#39;Orsay is normally closed on Mondays; Musée du Louvre and others on Tuesdays). For the rest, you should go out and pick up a good guidebook for Paris and create your own personal priorities list.

At Christmas in Paris, the Champs Élysées is decorated and lit, as are the grand magazins; there are free public ice skating rinks set up out in front of Hotel de Ville in the 4eme and at Place Raoul Dautry in the 15eme. In past years, the city has also set-up free carousels at various locations around the city. Even if you%26#39;re not Roman Catlolic, attend a late-Sunday morning service at Notre Dame...if only for the pomp and pagentry of the event.

|||

we will be in paris on 23, 24 and 25 December which are sunday, monday and tuesday. do yopu sugges that we take hop on hopf off trip one day? we are from belgium. attending the service will be nice but with kids it will be difficult. besides we r reaching paris on sunday afternoon.

can you suggest any good paris guide book?

|||

My favorite guidebooks (for ANY destination) are the Lonely Planet series. They make one for France as well as specifically for Paris.

I%26#39;ve used them on 4 continents and 23 countries!

|||

I have the lonely planet guide book for western europe. but they are very brief. so do you suggest that i buy the one for paris? I will be in paris for 3 days.

also do you suggest that seeing paris by hop on hop off bus is a better idea?

please also advise me regarding the website for seeing public transport routes from one address to another in english for paris.

do you think going to disney land with 5 and 6 yrs old kid in christmas is good idea? or will it be too cold and the queues and the rush will not make it worth going.

Thansking you in advance

|||

The guidebook for Paris does provide alot of good detail, but only 3 days? It may not be worth it because you already have ideas on what you%26#39;d like to see, but it can help with smaller questions you may have as you travel throughout the town.

I prefer the Metro system as it is far less complicated, less waiting, and you arrive usually faster at your destination. If you choose the bus, www.ratp.info/touristes/index.php…

I can only offer my opinion on Disney, the kids would love it, it is a magical place. If you decide to go, don%26#39;t let the cold, lines, etc. keep you from there. Only the loss of a full day in the city should do that.

Villa L'Aimee

Has anybody any information about the Villa L%26#39;Aimee in Nice. My husband and I have been to Nice a few times but are going with another couple (retired) and this looked like a great place to stay. Please let me know

ML Annapolis

|||

Hi there,

It%26#39;s seems to be a beautiful place. Location is not fabulous but with public transportation it won%26#39;t be a problem.

It seems pricy though. You can have a better location for this price.

Why not going to the West End Hotel (promenade), the Holiday Inn or the Windsor ?

|||

Thanks for replying. We will have a rental car and love to go out for day trips to Grasse, Menton, Monaco, Eze, Haut de Cagne, etc. so location I thought was okay for that - are you saying where this is located is not a nice neighborhood? I thought it was near the Matisse museum no? Please let me know.

|||

Hi,

The Matisse Museum is in Cimiez. 3 km from your villa so we can say it%26#39;s close. But Cimiez is not known to be a perfect base for tourism (even if Cimiez is a must see place) : it%26#39;s at 15 to 20 min bus from turistic attractions.

I think you can have a better location for this price or for less.

When will you come ? Using a car in Nice is not a good idea. Public transportation is much better. No way to park in the city, traffic jams, crazy drivers, gaz price, etc.

Why not spending a few days in Nice and then rent a car to reach you other destinations ?

|||

I also am looking at the Villa L%26#39;Aimee and I think it looks lovely. My concern is that they require payment in cash- not credit card. They also might require deposit in cash. On Travel Library website, where I first found the listing for Villa L%26#39;Aimee, they warn to be aware of owners that won%26#39;t accept credit card. When I wrote the owner about this, he hasn%26#39;t answered me. (He sent me many replies to my other questions.) Do you have any thoughts on this?

I%26quot;m actually purposefully looking for a place to stay that is NOT in Nice city center because of the traffic and noise. I%26#39;ve found 2 other villas or bed and breakfasts 10 minutes away from Nice that appear nice for 95E-110 E. If you want their names/websites, let me know.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Laurie

How to and from CDG during possible strike 16-19th Nov?

Hi!

Will be going to Paris on weekend trip Nov 16th (arrive in CDG in morning) until Nov 19th (go to CDG in evening). How will we manage to get to Paris best? Staing in 1er district. Prebook a taxi via hotel? Rent a car? Will there be any transportation lines open to and from CDG-Paris? Trip is not postponable and do not mind walking once in Paris.

Grateful for advice!!

Anna

|||

Strike is planned for the 14th.

Get a taxi at the door at CDG. No need to arrange for pick up.

Airport buses tend to work even when other transportation is on strike. RER seems to be first to shut down.

|||

photographe is right, get a taxi into town.

|||

I want to know exactly what transport if any will be running on the 16th. It is urgent. I cannot walk to Cergy Prefecture from Gare du Nord and I can%26#39;t afford an extremely expensive taxi :(

|||

%26gt;%26gt; I want to know exactly what transport if any will be running on the 16th. It is urgent. I cannot walk to Cergy Prefecture from Gare du Nord and I can%26#39;t afford an extremely expensive taxi :( %26lt;%26lt;

Unfortunately, there is no possible answer to your question. It%26#39;s impossible to know today what the situation on the 16th will be. We don%26#39;t know whether the strike will be actually rolling and we don%26#39;t know what the conditions will be on the various suburban lines.

You will find actual, reliable info in the afternoon of the 15th ...

It%26#39;s fairly obvious that you can%26#39;t walk from Cergy Préfecture to GDN.

But, FWIW, if the RER A is completely shut, there is a bus that runs between Cergy-Pontoise and CDG airport. It is operated by a private company under local authorities%26#39; franchise. It is very unlikely that it will be on strike.

u-cergy.fr/IMG/Horaires_cars_95-18_Roissy_-_…

But what may you possibly do in CDG when your desired destination is GDN ? Well, you will have two Air France bus lines to Paris, the 350 bus, the Roissybus, altogether making for a /doable/ though not relaxing, commute.

And way cheaper than the 70€ or so that a Cergy-Paris taxi would cost.

|||

Can you tell me more about the Air France buses from CDG into Paris? I will also be arriving on the morning of the 17th and was wondering how I would get from CDG into the city if the trains are still on strike. It sounds like a bus might be a good option.

If we take a taxi, any idea what the anticipated fare would be? Or how long the taxi lines might be in light of the train strike?

Thanks for the advice!

|||

hi we are also arriving on the 17th am with air transat from montreal(10.30 am approx) does anyone wish to share a transfer with the 2 of us? olease answer and any bus ideas, we are in the 7th in paris thanks, didi

|||

Taxi lines at CDG are not bad...+/- 15 minutes. It looked like busses at CDG are running, but you will have to be prepared to walk from the drop off point to your hotel, as taxis in Paris are quite dear right now. To me, better to take a taxi right to your hotel. I paid 55euro to 7 eme mid-day on Thursday, and the trip took 65 minutes.

Updated Price List for Paris Sites

I figured people who like to budget ahead of time (like myself), this list will help people plan . Some of my prices could be wrong...if so, please feel free to correct me.

I%26#39;m only listing adult prices in euros.

Eiffel Tower... 11.50 euros

Arc de Triumphe (going up) ... 5 euros

Notre Dame Tower... 5 euros

Catacombs... 4 euros

Versailles/Marie Antoinettes Estate... 16.50 euros

Conciergerie/St. Chapelles... 10 euros

Lourve... 9 euros

Any more additions??

Thanks

|||

Whoa there, MissBoston! Already, you%26#39;re at 61 Euros...

Buy the Paris Museum Pass (4-Day is 45 eu, 6-Day is 60 eu.)

You%26#39;ll get access to them all AND skip the lines getting in!!!!!

http://www.parismuseumpass.com

|||

I don%26#39;t think that%26#39;s correct - the Paris Museum Pass doesn%26#39;t grant you free access to the Eiffel tower or the Catacombes.

And the Catacombes rate for adults is 7€, not 4€ (but €3.50 for 14-26 years old). The Arc de Triomphe is 8€ (5€ is the rate for 18-25 years)

Paris apartment

Hello everyone. I am from Australia and my daughter is currently doing a backpacker trip around the word. My husband is sick of hearing me say how much I miss her and has surprised me with a trip to Europe for 4 weeks. My daughter and I will be meeting In Paris in Mid march and I would like to book perhaps an apartment or a quaint hotel etc. We will be in paris for 5 nights and then I thought we could hire a car and drive through Italy ending in Rome before I fly out. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a nice apartment or hotel etc in Paris that is not too expensive. Unfortunately our Australian dollar does not rate too well against the Euro.

Paris gare de Lyon to gare de Austerlitz

Hello,

I am trying to find out if there is a connection underground from gare de Lyon to gare de Austerlitz.

The reason is we are going to stay at the Novotel next to gare de Lyon for 10 days but are going to be Amboise for 3 nights leaving from and returning to gare de Austerlitz.

My question is if it is possible to walk from one place to the other or if we should take a taxi,we are going to carry luggage.

Thanks you.

|||

The two are fairly close. You%26#39;ll have a map of Paris and can judge the distance. You can take the Metro with one transfer, or the 24, 57 or 61

city bus.

|||

There is no underground direct connection but a very convenient bus : n°91 (coming from Montparnasse, direction Bastille).

If you don%26#39;t have too many luggages, and if it is not raining, you can also walk; it is a 15%26#39; walk, just the Seine to cross.

|||

Thank you all

Caveau de la Huchette or Oubliettes?

I will be in Paris for one night (staying in Latin Qtr) in Dec 2007 and want to go experience some nightlife. I have narrowed it down to Caveau de la Huchette %26amp; Caveau des Oubiliettes. Which would you recommend?

Thanks!

|||

hi Moonpie67, we know le Caveau de la Huchette, sometimes R%26amp;R concerts, sometimes jazz concerts, often a dance school on the floor, 1st class exhibition, nice atmo ...consult the program, adm. fees on : www.caveaudelahuchette.fr

No idea about Caveau des Oubliettes, they have an internet site, but no program available for december. No admittance fees and drinks from 5 euros, cheaper than La Huchette.

You have one more not so far : Le Petit Journal Saint Michel :

pagesperso-orange.fr/claude.philips/PJprogra…

and another one in the 14th : Le Petit Journal Montparnasse :

www.petitjournal-montparnasse.com

|||

Buy a Pariscope and look at concert programs for jazz and other types of music. It all depends what you like. I do like Petit Journal saint Michel and Petit Journal Montparnasse, not as close but you can walk back.

|||

I can%26#39;t tell from the web page...is Oubliettes the one with the guillotine in the bar?

Pjk

|||

yes, that%26#39;s the one, web site is :

www.caveaudesoubliettes.com

and web site for all the jazz club in Paris is :

www.parisjazzclub.net

Has anyone used any of these two Apartment Rental websites?

I am currently communicating with the following:

www.ownersdirect.co/uk (for an apartment in Nice)

www.nyhabitat.com (for an apartment in Paris)

Any feedback on any of these would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks

Avoid Parisianhome

I’d like to warn you from using aparisianhome.com. I’ve rented short-term apartments in many countries and from different agencies. Usually this is a hassle-free way to be accommodated. Parisian home is the exception. First it was a real trouble finding the apartment. Not only was their description on how to find the apartment inaccurate, they had given me an incomplete door code as well. Hours later, when finally entering the apartment I discovered that the lights did not work. This was a real nuisance since there was no window to let in light in the bathroom. It was pitch black in there. Also, the promised equipment like a stereo and iron etc. did not work. Despite my repeated demands and visits to the office it took them nearly a month to fix the lights and the equipment. Not a word of apology though. After leaving the apartment they did not repay the full deposit, but said they were charging (a ridiculously high sum) for the electricity (around four times the amount you usually pay). It has been impossible to get any explanation or verification of their calculations. I think that they have put in system to overcharge the electricity in order to make some extra money. Another downside with the agency is that there is quite a disorder at the agency and they are often rude when you are dealing with them. But it is not certain that the same would happen to you.

|||

we got an apartment for a month in the 20th through NYhabitat and it was the best apartment we have ever rented in Europe (out of a couple dozen)

they appear however to be just an agent that lists and connects you with the owner -- they take their hefty cut and then you are on your own with the owner making arrangements --

our owner spoke no English and we speak no French (or not much anyway) -- we managed to cope and we were totally happy with the place and the owner -- but if there were problems I am dubious about how helpful the agency would be -- we didn%26#39;t get to test that because we were completely happy with the apartment and had no problems getting the deposit back etc

so great experience -- but not able to tell you if they would be effective for problems

we have also used locaflat and they were fine (drawback is you have to go to their office to get the key) but they were professional, the place was as advertised, they were easy to deal with -- billed electricity off the meter which we reported so no scams there-- totally above board in our one experience

we have also used oppodohome and were totally pleased with that apartment -- the owner handed us our security deposit check back when we checked in (once he sized us up) because he wasn%26#39;t going to be there when we checked out

we also rented one apartment through VRBO and had a perfect experience also -- that one is just a listing service for owners so it depends on the owner

|||

Thank you so much for you feedback,

So far my experience with NYHabitat has not been a good one. After receiving an e-mail from them I responded immediately, called after a few hours of no response and even left a message to call me back and as of today have not received a response. I do understand that they are open from M-F but I did respond to there e-mail within 15 minutes of it being sent in the morning. I guess I%26#39;m insistent since I will be in Paris in late May and want everything to be perfect.

Anyways, I found another website and was wondering if any of you had any experience with them. This is the apartment I am thinking of renting:

victoria-parishomes.com/victoria-paris-engli…

Please let me know what you think of the studio as well as the area where it is located.

Any advice and feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much

Sorry, in my attempt to make sure that my spelling was accurate I pasted instead of deleting and pasting.

|||

I actually had a really good experience with parisianhome.com

my brother came and visited me this past summer and had a really good time using their services. He didn%26#39;t seem to have any problems wiith the staff and when a light went out (the only one in the bathroom!) they came over that very same day to repair it. so...i%26#39;m not really sure what the other guy was talking about...some people have bad experiences wherever they go. maybe you should check it out yourself at parisianhome.com

|||

LOL! Does anyone believe this guy?? I don%26#39;t!!!

|||

Try one of the %26quot;tried and true%26quot; agencies that always gets good feedback here, such as Vacation in Paris (www.vacationinparis.com). They are based in the US and have been very easy to deal with when I have called them.

|||

I second Vacation In Paris...they are an agency but they also mail your apt key to you which is very convient. They mailed my key two weeks prior to my departure.

So far so good..many good reviews about them.

|||

This summer we rented through regentsuites.com which is based in LA. I liked that they were on west coast time and could contact them when it was convenient for me. Sam was wonderful! Their local reps in paris parissimo.fr were equally great. They also arranged car service for us at CDG at a reasonable rate for 6 of us. I prefer agencies that take credit cards as you have some recourse if things go wrong. I also don%26#39;t like the fees that international wiring has. It can add up!
