WW1 Cemetery at Contalmaison

My travelling companion and I are in our late sixties and both her cousin and my uncle died on the Somme in 1916. My uncle is buried at Contalmaison which I have found out is a small village about 5 kilomenters from Albert. Apparently it is possible to get to Albert (and Amiens) by train from Paris and then get a taxi from Albert to Contalmaison. We would like to see Monet%26#39;s Garden in Giverny and then go on to Albert and Contalmaison, but ideally a two day(one night) tour from Paris would be preferable as we need to return there to fly home to Australia. Does anyone have any better ideas?

Hi Bigwsister

You might find some better advice on forums relating to that area like the Amiens forum

Thanks Faux, I have looked at this site. How sad to find that there are 1000 Commonwealth War Graves in Northern France. Some of the information on one of the sites might work for us.

Have you looked up the Australian War Memorial records?

www.awm.gov.au/database/biographical.asp

Roll of Honour lists all who died and information including the cemetary details. Other information is found under %26quot;Research a person%26quot;

My friends and I (all New Zealanders) spent Armistice Day and the 9th %26amp; 10th of November in Northern France and also Flanders in Belgium. It was not hard to be moved to tears on more than one occasion.

If you have the time, I recommend that you visit Ypres (or Iper) in Belgium where many New Zealanders and Australians fought side by side. In Ypres is the Menin Gate (a monument to the fallen) and the names of many Australians were listed on it. Every night at 8pm they stop the traffic and have a small serivce.

We hired a car from Lille and had no problem driving around. The various monuments and cemeteries are marked with signs.
